Does AECOsim Building Designer v8i need a backend database server?

It's a standalone desktop application.

It does integrate really well with ProjectWise, our collaboration and information management software that allows you to share projects between multiple users/offices and manage the project workspaces. That a combination of a desktop client and a server, but it's not required.

1. Is PW Managed Workspaces required for Building Designer?
2. Is AECOsim Energy Simulator v8i a stand-alone product also?

1) PW Managed Workspaces are not required. They do make life a lot easier if you have multiple people working on the same project.
2) AES is a standalone product today... when Ss6 is released any day now, its conceptual analysis engine will be included with ABD.
