Part/Assembly/DGType - Aren't they the same?

First a Part, Assembly or DGtype don't truely stand alone if you want all features abailable for you.

That that said

To create a DG Single Wyth wall  it is a part that is made into an assembly that is added to a DG catalob

To create a DG Mult-Wyth Wall it is a group of parts that are made into an assembly and added to a DG catalog

To create a DG wall you must have done one of the things above

THEY DON'T STAND ALONE

Why not have a tool that takes the wall                  automatically to a DG Catalog of the same name, ht, width, etc

Why not have a tool that takes a assembly            automatically to a DG Catalog of the same name, ht, width, etc

Maybe  a button in the DIALOG for Part Creation

Or         a button when you save an assembly

That created a DG Catalog from their information - you fill in the blanks and can change the verables but I cannot see why you ever would.

  • Yes, this has come up before. In fact... we have Enhancement # 20427 filed for this request. I even created a potential mock-up at the time based on your original description. However, I don't believe there are any plans at this time to change the UI since CONNECT has a number of changes in that area as it is.

  • this is a specific reason we don't have adoption in the other offices. My Mstation Engineers, - though few - say it is still too complicated and all still use 2d. just now coming into V8i

  • I just hope these thoughts go forward.
    A simple example is Sheets
I make sure on the hard drive they are numbered.
But too often a sheet can get added in the middle of the job. Or many as a project set of drawings evolves.
This could be easier. for this one it might be a better, more user friendly menu that handles all the sheet files.
Somewhere that you control all the other things that could be utilized in properties, in addition to the sheet number
Date Created, Last Edit, Rev State, Contents, and even some how keep up with a total - including those from other disiplines that might only be in pdf format for many or not even delivered.

This example goes awry of the original discussion but not really.
It is all about the several ways to do naming of any stage of a drawing but not that are organized. they are scattered.

I understand Connect, but I understand we've the issue for a long time and the request is good for connect too.

Final Question.- If this is reliant on Connect - will they be the ones to handle things like sheets or naming of Parts. Or is this not something that is specific for ABD.

  • I'm not sure how well these questions can be answered since it's still early in the process, but AFAIK the aspect of Families and Parts is still unique to ABD so will be in the future ABD CONNECT as well. OTOH, the core DV creation process (including sheet naming) still exists within MicroStation itself as it does today in V8i.
