Best Practice - Drawing Output with Cached Visible Edges

Please note our recommended workflow for Drawing Production in AECOsim Building Designer is to use Cached Visible Edges in the Dynamic Views process as described in detail in this blog: ABD SS6 - Best Practices - Cached Visible Edges

This approach offers many performance and management benefits to projects of all scales.

  • Have found it bad to use cached views as with a project of any size it gets lost what is up to date.We Only freeze sets at the end of a milestone and find that is best when copied to a backup directory. If this is a production house where your drawings are live caching is not wise.

  • Once drawings are cached the application does notify users that changes have taken place. In the documentation referred to we suggest ways and means to update.

  • If you have a project of any size.  Lets say 100 Sheets with 100 drawings that could have a cached drawing.  Two thinks continually occur.

    1. You WILL product drawings that are not up to date.  Unavoidable.
    2. You will lose time constantly "Un-doing the Cache and rebuilding it."  This is the SAME process we still have with DEM.
      1. If Caching is considered viable the DEM would be even better as it is faster than the Cached drawing to work within.
      2. Otheriwse it is basically the same workflow.
      3. Note, there is a reason we went away from DEM.  So that things were always live.
      4. And a saved drawing set is a better history of milestone drawings than History or Cached Drawings.

  • The cache does not need to be undone, this is not recommended, it should be updated. This can be done manually on demand or by batch process.

Note that MicroStation CONNECT Edition has an incremental cache option that updates only the delta changes so is much faster. There is also the option to automatically sync the cache:

This is a platform feature that will be available in ABD CONNECT.

  • But it still is not live - and just another flavor of DEM.

If live was faster and more reliable then Caching would not be needed
