Stairs / Landings

I am drawing a hand balustrade and our legislation needs increase the height of the balustrade at landings.

The height at the pitch of the stair needs to be 900 but at landings it needs to be either 1000-1100mm. Is there a setting to make this possible?

  • Michael,

There is no setting for that at all! AECOsim is not that intelligent and/or flexible at all. You will need to do that manually using MicroStation tools.

  • Hello Michael,

    What version are you using?

New in SELECTseries 6 are the profile tools. The Place Profile tool allows you to extrude a cell from a library along a path (either a path that you draw at placement time or along an existing element) and report on its length and volume.

And these tools can be used for modifying profiles: Ungroup Profle, Break Wall and Connect Forms as (L Bisector)

And they are DataGroup components so you can change the profile with the Modify DataGroup Properties tool.

  • Hi Paul,

Tried what you suggested, a bit clunky in my opinion, basically you are still using MicroStation tools. Only difference that now you extrude a cell. Getting the impression that AECOsim has been developed by developers and not by designers (no logic in the software). I am adding a video to show how quick and easy it can be.

    HTH,

  • Hiya - we are limited to Select Series 5 due to Client requirements (limitations?).

I have been working with AecoSIM for a (relatively) very short time but to be honest I am finding this a big chore, its not the modelling which is a problem but more the process we need to go through to create drawings such as.

    • Creating drawings using dynamic views - seems to work beautifully on your 'learn' films and the Bentley youtube channel but we can't replicate the functionality on a clean 'out of the box' install. There are too many options / overrides ways of achieving the same effects most of our objects seem to disappear during the process - I can't tell if it is due to how the objects are modelled or one of the myriad of settings between model and sheet file.
    • Amending existing information - for example little things like increasing the height of a stair once it is placed. . . . having to go and edit the catalogue library is weird.
    • Creating 'bespoke' content and cells - ie a special door, curtain walling, windows. Parametric cell studio is just bizarre and the only answer appears to be 'import a revit family'. . . . this seems to be an odd choice!
    • Levels galore. . . . just no need.
    • Can't create a balustrade using the balustrade tool! If we can't amend the height of railings we can't draw a compliant design when using this tool, (its basic stuff here!!)

As a company we are trying to arrange for Bentley to come in and give some training to see how you guys are intending all this to work but arranging a date is like pulling teeth.

Apologies for the rant. . . . but when I compare this to learning other software platforms in 12 weeks I managed to learn the new software platform, draw a whole 80m x 25m building grade 2 listed building and get out a set of planning drawings. There also seem to be much more 'fan' based content on the web for other platforms - user buy in for AecoSIM appears limited to the Bentley forums.

*sigh* Not really sure if this helps but it made me feel better! ;-) #Friday #RollOnTheWeekend

  • Hi Michael,

    • Please can you or your support team file a Service Request about the dynamic view process and send us some sample files or screenshots, we can offer some guidance via support prior to training be delivered.
    • I've filed a defect reporting the incorrect setting in the GB Dataset that prevents the height of placed stairs from being edited. If you change the setting for all stair types in the shared dataset it will be available for all future stairs.
    • Parametric cell Studio is a very old application, very smart in it's day but now out of date and very idiosyncratic in use, we are working towards replacement tools based on MicroStation CONNECT Edition Functional Components. Compound Cells are an easier way to make components, albeit not parametric ones.
    • Levels: Please look at level filters. Another trivial but irritating defect in the GB Dataset is the lack of a used filter, I'll send you a fix for that shortly.
    • This is a limitation of the stair builder, MicroStation tools need to be used.

I have asked a sales colleague to look into your comment on arranging training.
