Stairs / Landings

I am drawing a hand balustrade and our legislation needs increase the height of the balustrade at landings.

The height at the pitch of the stair needs to be 900 but at landings it needs to be either 1000-1100mm. Is there a setting to make this possible?

  • Hello Michael,

    What version are you using?

New in SELECTseries 6 are the profile tools. The Place Profile tool allows you to extrude a cell from a library along a path (either a path that you draw at placement time or along an existing element) and report on its length and volume.

And these tools can be used for modifying profiles: Ungroup Profle, Break Wall and Connect Forms as (L Bisector)

And they are DataGroup components so you can change the profile with the Modify DataGroup Properties tool.

  • Hi Paul,

Tried what you suggested, a bit clunky in my opinion, basically you are still using MicroStation tools. Only difference that now you extrude a cell. Getting the impression that AECOsim has been developed by developers and not by designers (no logic in the software). I am adding a video to show how quick and easy it can be.

    HTH,

  • And that's just the the one of Adesk's 2 Building offerings that's regarded as 'primitive', old fashioned and under developed, compared to Revit.
  • If I may say this, I find AECOsim primitive as it can be! I have been using it for a good while now and I have never seen a software as complex as AECOsim. Getting the impression that Bentley doesn't look further than their own products.
If I design something I look around to get inspiration, Bentley appears to be stuck in their own world and don't want to get out of it. :(
  • I agree with the previous comments on AECOsim. I've been using it since day one and Microstation for 25 yrs...and I find that almost every core feature tool Bentley puts out, wall, roof, windows, floors, etc..lacks in content, usability and user friendliness, is limited in capability and rely too much on user feedback to point out all the shortcomings. Just like the stairs tool discussed here, in most cases, I cannot get the stairs to come out the way I want them. For example, I have issues with how the last upper riser is connected to the floor, moving a landing is problematic, the 2D graphics of the stairs don't always come out right, the tool takes forever to load, etc...
I have used Revit, it has many impressive benefits, but it also has shortcomings too. The main reason I'm sticking with AECOsim is because of the cost of switching, and I have the Microstation experience to find workafrounds to almost every situation I come across...Its not surprising that an inexperienced user would have trouble navigation the complexity of AECOsim.
I sure hope that Bentley can step it up soon and simplify AECOsim's workflows and make especially the core tool more robust and user friendly going forward.

  • Hi Gary,
The CONNECT edition is where ABD is headed, and aside from the port to 64bits (which is massive) one of the primary tasks for the development team is streamlining the UI. We do expect functional changes as well along the lines of the topics you've mentioned, but first we need a CONNECT version to build on. Pun semi-intended. :)
