What is the problem with Bentley Products?

I have to say this that I am getting nuts when I want to turn off a level, whether it is  in View Display or Level Manager, it starts selecting all other levels! You click on one level and MicroStation/AECOsim decides to select all other levels too.

And NO it has nothing to do with my file or configuration so please don't ask for the file or configuration. Out-of-the-box MicroStation/AECOsim behaves the same and Bentley may try it on every version they want to (MS=SS3 and ABD = SS4 - SS6). Tip for Bentley when trouble shooting, don't open the program and turn off levels because it works fine when you just started the software, it starts behaving weird when you are working for a while.

  • This sounds like an intermittent problem that we saw with a couple of users a year or so ago. The intermittent nature of the problem made it difficult to troubleshoot.

    • Do you see this in all files or just some?
    • Do you see this in multiple projects or just one?
    • How large are the files involved?
    • How many references are attached?
    • In affected files are there particular levels that host very large numbers of elements?

  • Marc,

It happens in every single file and project regardless of the amount of references. It is happening right now in a file with just 1 reference, file size 1,2MB, and I am absolutely getting very frustrated because Bentley also decided to put hundreds of levels into AECOsim just to keep the user busy!

Another free tip for Bentley, let AECOsim add levels when an object (which is on that level, i.e. A-WALL) is added so user doesn't have to flick through the millions of levels. Yes you can setup filters... but why should everything need to be configured before actually using the software??? Don't use a development approach of everything needs setup and configuration. Not every user has the time to spend days and weeks just to configure the software because a shed needs to be drawn!

Revit, AutoCAD Architecture, Allplan and ArchiCAD don't have millions of configuration.... install it and start using it that is what it should be like. I will go further pulling out my hair.
  • Ok, please can you try the following:
    1. Compress the file with all options ticked (right-click in the dialog for all on/off options) and with compress references selected.
    2. Assuming that you are in ABD SS6 run the DataGroup Upgrade utility (Utilities menu > Building Designer Utilities... > DataGroup Upgrade utility using the include references option.

See if those steps have any effect.

If not please delete (or rename if you would like to retain the original) your preferences folder.
See if that has any effect.

Note just as general point (I don't know if this applies as I don't know how you are set up) it is good practice not to carry preferences forward to new SS versions.

FWIW, at a local BIM Hub event the other day it was recommended to invest at least three days training on setting up Revit templates before using it seriously. I know CAD Managers that have spent quite a bit of time on their templates, the need to invest time in setting up is not unique to our applications.

    Regards

    Marc

  • Our system is setup by default to compress the file when closing it, with everything checked, so that is probably not it and I am on SS5 (clients request).

I usually work with Revit so I know what to do in Revit, it is ABD that needs to work properly, IMHO it needs to be redeveloped from scratch and properly tested by designers and not developers. My work is done for today with ABD and am back on Revit now.
  • I have never seen what you describe - strange.

Compress on exit is not the same as manual compress.
Search the forums back a year or so for threads about it.
