RFA import from Google 3D Warehouse

AECOsim Building Designer V8i (SS6)

Version 08.11.09.863

Hi everyone,

I have just downloaded some doors from google 3D warehouse and I intend to import them into the ABD catalogue. Can someone please guide me on how to go about this since my model does not have a .rfa extension.

I welcome any suggestion/s

Thank you

Defect 527267: Some RFA downloads from UK National BIM Library will not import

  • I think that the Dev responsible for the RFA-I would be putting this at the bottom of his to do pile as we speak.

I wonder if the TR/SR should read:

    1. Please provide batch processing for RFA-I. Now that it is included as a platform tool with CE-U2, maybe there will be more resource allocation for this.

    2. Use NBS library to tune and debug batch processing tool and RFA-I. Download the different product RFA types, starting with the most used like doors, windows, mech items.

    3. Sort the cases where RFA-I doesn't work. I think converting the parametrics will always be a fiddly uphill task as there are so many permutations possible on the authoring side and no guarantee that there are no bugs or undocumented quirks.

    4. Revit's Family Editor is parametric and constraints based. So is ABD's Parametric Solids (and the nascent Parametric Content Modeler?) Get the PS team to help figure things out. It will be good for them as well to know what AEC parametric modeling looks beyond Bentleyland.

    5. Build an NBS content library to be included as an optional adjunct to the GB dataset. The first edition wouldn't have 5000+ objects but over time, we should get most of this converted.

    6. Park the content on the Bentley Connect cloud?

I don't think so. Our RFA consumption tools have wider usage with their incorpration into the MicroStation CONNECT platform. This makes them available to all of our products based on this platform across a range of disciplines so there is every incentive to resolve RFA issues.

Agreed, this is the challenge with consuming any kind of content produced by someone else, whether a manufacturer, NBS, other designers or whoever.

The current RFA wizard allows multiple source files to be added so we already have batch processing at our end (unless I'm missing something?), the tedious part seems to be getting the RFA files downloaded and unzipped.

We have a Bentley Connect content service on the way that will be capable of hosting multiple data formats (not just graphics) and wil be integrated with our products, details can be found elsewhere, I don't have a current link to hand.

Not buildings, but one example of a Bentley parametric solution looking beyond currnet tech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgydHQzxvCE

  • An update on this one, we have identified data in some downloaded RFA content that currently prevents the RFA Wizard from interpreting the affected objects. We are working on a solution to be included in a later product update. We can't comment on dates at the moment.
