customized section for structrual memeber in AECOsim??

Hej guys,

this is an old topic I brought it up again as I never find the prefect solution.....

I managered to use Shapestemplate.xls file to ceate section xml files for structrual members in AECOsim.

but the type are limited within the predefined shapes....

is there a way I can make my own?? so that I can make my onw columns and beams.

fx. shapes like this??

I have tried to use the new profile function, but it is too far away from being useful..............

thanks a lot.

  • Hello Yijia Yin,

I used the place profile tool to model shapes like you are showing. I created two profiles in the profile.cel library, basically I copied the Zee-Profile-01 model, renamed and edited it. I created new Catalog Items under the Profile Catalog Type with the catalog editor and pointed these new profile catalog items to use the new cell profiles I created. I also set the Family & Part to Steel::Girts.

    New Cells: Zee-Girt-01, Channel-Girt-01

    New Catalog Items: Zee-Girt-01, Channel-Girt-01

I can now place those with the Place Profile tool.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Thx Paul, i have tried the same Thing with the profile function, from creating section in .cel file to making new datagroup items. It works fine AS long AS i am only placing a small amount of the profile. The bug in this tool is: 1. The profile Can NOT be rotated nor mirrored on the section plan, after it has been placed.... I mentioned the issue before, NOT sure if it has been fixed....
    2. The file gets very large and slow, after placing a large amount of profiles, fx 600 pieces. I Think it has something to Do with database design associated to datagroup system. I tried to place 600 pieces of Z profile ( similar AS the one in your example) along a Line for a sheetpile Wall . The file size reached over 150 MB , and if i Want to change first 50 piece to another type of profile, it Will take at least 30min to load datagroup items and refresh the design. Therefor i Got back to normal structral member tools, i Can create a double z section by using the shape template roof deck. And it is running smoothly with 600-700 pieces structural members in the file. I Can to whatever i Want to Them and it takes less than 30 sec to change type of the structural members.
So before this Two issue have been solved, i really have find something Else other than profile tool. But Thanks again for your detailed post. Thx
  • Hello Yijia Yin,

That leads me to ask about the particular project you are working on. For example, in some projects we can utilize a form (like a wall) to represent the type of wall material. Like a metal stud wall, we are not modelling each stud in the wall, simply defining a form to the correct thickness and reflecting the material in the name of the wall - "4" Mtl Stud" for example. The walls could have a hatch pattern assigned to the family & part for representation on the drawings to designate that type of wall.

Then we could show in certain areas of detail the actual studs in the wall. For example  where we are cutting a section drawing or having a enlarged plan drawing called out or needing to coordinate with mechanical, etc.

We think about this as the "level of detail" that we model to in our models. Sometimes we have to consider the return of investment of our time spent modeling and the subsequent file sizes to a level of detail we don't see on our drawings.

If there is a need for that level of detail (each project is different) then you may consider breaking the project up into smaller areas or zones, our federated approach to managing the project files. Then utilize reference attachments of the area/zone files to a master model where we see the whole project coming together.

    Thanks

    Paul

  • hej Paul,
I am working for the harbour department, we deal a lot of harbour projects with sheeppile walls. different from other departments, we need the sheet piles to be modeled quite detailed up for BIM usage. fx. maybe for a road, railway project, sheetpile walls can modeled as a line with special signature, but we will have to model it up so that it as the correct modul length, height, with at least section area and unit weight as information attached to the elements. the way of breaking the file according to the stage/ detail level of the project works maybe OK in some degrees. but it will be difficult to maintain the project afterwards. we can use a line element as sheetpiles, and detailed 3d elements for further project. but to maintain/transfer element information from a line element to the 3D objects will be a very diffcult job.... and I have to take the PC performance and file size into consideration. unless bentley is going to fix the profile function, otherwise I have to find something else. I even used PC studio to make 3D sheetpiles. its actually an OK tool because the 2D plan function can reduce the time for 2D drawings. but making a 3d model in PCS is not that easy.......
furthermore, we would like to commuinitcate with our road/ railway department. so far I can see AECOsim objects can not be used in inroads model ( that will be another question I post later.....)
    thx
