Unique Door Numbers from a Repeated Reference file.

Hi All,

We are currently working on a larger building and have split our model up by floor level into typical core, façade, floor etc. we then reference in the say the core multiple times and move it up in elevation before we export to ifc for the consultant team and the master BIM model.

The question I have is in regards to doors.

I need to identify each door in the model so they can be identified in the master model or in some other package.

I am struggling with this on how do I add multiple door tags to a single door. The door number is consistent across floors we just prefix the floor number.

So maybe the question is how to do update a door number by prefixing the level number to it automatically or in ifc export.

Thanks

Wayne.

  • Hi Wayne,

The method that has been adopted by a number of our users in response to this question is to leave door numbering and any other item specific properties until a point in the project where the design is stable enough to save all of the typical instances as unique storey specific instances. At that point every door is an individual instance and can have it's properties manipulated via Edit in Excel. I was told in one particular conversation that this was acceptable at production stage as "there is always something different about every floor anyway".

  • Thanks Marc,

I had thought of that as the solution for the final issue, with some help we have managed to trick the door tag into producing what we need for our drawings but the model issue brings another challenge. I will put some thought into how to streamline it in our workflow.

    Thanks for the help.

  • Hi Wayne,

There is also method of creating schedules that labels doors by floor independently of the object properties, I've just been reminded of this by Mary Chib in the ABD SIG. While this does not help with IFC it may be useful in other situations.

If each referenced floor, whether unique or typical, is given a Logical name that contains the appropriate floor number/label, that logical name can be added as a schedule column, then used as the first 'group by' sort criterion:

  • Thanks Marc,

We are currently running that solution on another project that doesn't have a model deliverable for facilities etc.

It is working well, I think in this case we will have to take the first option and when the time is right create a new file for each level to allow the doors to travel through the IFC export to the correct level and door number etc.

    Thanks

  • Wayne If it is just in terms of scheduling with repeated references, I filter these using logical reference names, though it can either be relatively simple or quite complex to set up depending on your reference structure. Compiling your master model of models for each individual floor with internal files(cores/internal partitions etc) nested within is quite straightforward.

Basically, with each reference file, attach with a unique logical name, ie level 00 - core, level 01 - core etc. Then in your schedule you can filter first by logical name, then by door number.

in terms of exporting for IFC, If you are able to arrange your master model with nested references so that the floor composition files are logically named as per the spatial containment it should give you an equivalent result.
