Deployment Image option still not working properly

I thought the Update 1 release was supposed to have fixed the Deployment Image option, because it hasn't

It still downloads everything, not just the options I selected.

And when I come to install AECOsim using the created Deployment Image, it doesn't remember the custom directory I defined for installation. I have to create the image with the full UI so I can change the directory when I do the install.

And it only installs the default US dataset. I have to manually install the additional ones I want.

I hope the next update will fix this.

  • I'm having issues with this as well.

A few weeks ago I installed ABD_CE on my local machine to test, and all seemed fine there. First thing Monday I sat down to set up a deployment image with a custom network config so that our IT support dept are able to easily deploy CE correctly to our circa 20 users when the time comes (i.e. asap).

    A number of issues occurred:

    1. There were 2 links at the software centre, one "straight" ABD_CE, and smaller labelled "Update 1". I'd previously used the "straight" one for my local test, but it wasn't clear whether "Update 1" was a full package or just an update patch. I assumed the prior, and downloaded "Update 1" to use to make the deployment issue. A side issue (now solved), neither link worked. Both dead. But anyhow, I eventually managed to get the installer.

    2. I created a deployment image, and a corresponding placeholder network config folder on our network. The deployment image appeared to have been created successfully, so I installed the image on my own machine (after uninstalling my previous test version of CE). On testing, I found numerous errors:

2a. The network config location had been lost. The pointer simply hadn't been implemented, so ABD_CE had no knowledge of the custom config.

2b. I'd set options to only install the UK dataset, but the US dataset had been downloaded and installed as well (I didn't want that).

2c. Inside the software, I made a test file and modelled a few architectural walls from the catalog, and clicked "Schedules", but saw no schedules. Filter was set to "Show used only", so I changed that back to "Show All", and the only available schedules were the HVAC ones. Where are the rest?

So I uninstalled everything, read up on the above issues, and tried again. I was able to implement Marc's workaround for the custom config location. I also tried ticking the Neutral Metric dataset as well as the UK one this time (as I wondered whether some of the examples needed something in either that or the US one, and so installed the US one by default). On testing, I still have issues:

    1. All datasets were downloaded during the deployment creation process, and got saved into the deployment issue. I didn't want that (is ly needed?).

    2. On install, I still think more datasets than desired are being installed. The following appear under AECOsimExamples: BuildingTemplate_NM, BuildingTemplate_UK, BuildingTemplate_US, COBieTemplate_US, Multi-use_Retail_Building_NM, Multi-Use_Retail_Building_US, TrainingTemplate_NM, TrainingTemplate_US. Again, I don't really want any of the US ones deploying.

    3. On test, I still only get HVAC entries in the schedules view, so something's still wrong there.

  • Hi Thomas,

Update 1 is the current installer, sorry to hear you had problems with the links.

As discussed above, we are still seeing some instances where all datasets are downloaded into the Deployment Image folder regardless of the UI selection, I understand this has been fixed for Update 2 and will continue to test with our internal builds.

Once the ConfigurationSetup.cfg has been modified, subsequent installations should leave the modified file in place unless the path is changed in the installation UI.

While it is obviously unsatisfactory to have to do this, pending Update 2 unwanted Dataset Templates can simply be deleted. The list you include is the correct set of templates that come when NM, UK and (unwanted) US datasets are installed. We have included the Multi-Use_Retail_Building and TrainingTemplate examples for use with our online training materials rather than expecting users to download and install specific datasets for each course. I'd recommend installing the NM dataset alongside UK for this reason.

Regarding the Schedules, please look at the pop-down list opened by the down arrow to the right of Filter in the Schedules dialog Toolbar:

What do you have ticked in that list?

I tried it again at home on a laptop with the bare Windows 10 install, hoping it might be something in my installed programs.

It wasn't. It downloaded everything again.

I also tried it at work again, selecting only the AU dataset. downloaded everything again.

As a test, I tried using the deployment files. The installation didn't save my preferred install directory. And the US and AU datasets were ticked. I couldn't select any of the other datasets.

I have attached the LVT file from my last attempt.

  • Hi Michael,

The LYT file contains the correct settings to install only AU. We'll dicuss further and get back to you.

  • Hi Michael,

Having discussed this and read back to the beginning of the thread I've lost track of the fact that you are using Full UI mode. This will download everything so a user does not encounter errors if selecting datasets or features different from those pre-selected (as notes in the relevant wiki).

If you select your custom install location in U2 does it now save that?

It looks like you are correct. I didn't know about the wiki until you linked to it.

I thought Full UI Mode meant that you could check what was being installed.

I did it with the Passive Mode (default), and it worked as advertised.

The install also used my custom location.

    Thanks for clarifying things.

  • Michael,

Glad to have helped, sorry it took a while to get there. Cognitive bias kicked in driven by the fact that we did have some relevant defects at the time.
