we are using DV's on the new project hoping it would streamline the process from model to drawing sheet
the problems we have encountered are making me think that drawing extractions were perhaps easier and quicker
before I explain the problems, I will explain our workflow
We are working on ProjectWise for modelling and in the creation of DV's
a) reference all 3d models into one composite model - this is where we have made the DV's
note the DV created is only the model, not drawing sheet as we need to use client supplied files for all output
b) reference DV model to drawing sheet model space, note the model space in the client supplied file is 3d not 2d
note we need to add sections or multiple plans in some cases which is also why we don't create the sheet at the create DV stage
c) reference the model space into the sheet space adjust and add notes etc.
Problem 1 - when we print the drawing it is taking in some cases an hour or more. the print preview shows blank unless rasterise is ticked. when it rasterises it creates 42 tiles which is why it is taking so long
Problem 2 - when references are amended, the dv that has been referenced into a drawing sheet looses its clip this has meant we have had to re-create the DV and bring it back into the drawing model space all over again
Note, our models are placed on a geographically correct grid (provided by our client)
I tried ripping the files from ProjectWise and printing to PDF, this made the process slightly quicker but still rasterising
Questions
1. Is the rasterising happening because the referenced DV files are 3d?
2. Is our workflow flawed in any way?
3. Are the problems related to placing models on a geographically correct grid?
4. would it help if the drawing sheet file model space was 2d and not 3d?
Hello David,
Are the references in the Drawing Models cached?
Marc
no references not cached.

I did at one point download all the files onto my C drive to print them and found that it was slightly quicker but still 20-40 mins depending on the amount of model in the drawing
I have been working on similar size projects for the last 7 years or more and where drawing extraction's were used, they had their problems but they printed a lot quicker and I never had to rasterise to get a PDF or print
As stated above, each drawing was taking about an hour to print (A3 printer not plotter)
All the drawings which relied on DV's were rasterising
What version are you using?
1. Shouldn't have to rasterise for normal plan/section etc views. Use CVE's for better output. Early versions like SS3 did require a lot more rasterisation.
2. I would use the Named / Drawing Boundary tools to generate DV's.
3. I assume that you mean that you have a large Design Cube with low precision, and are not using geo-referencing. Beware having the model outside the SWA, especially if you are using Aecosim. The model would be within 4.3km of the global origin at the corresponding unit precision. I think that SmartSolids especially have problems with being too far away.
4. Pass.
David,
Referencing the Drawing models into 3D design models in the drawing sheet model space should not be problematic. It would be better in the drawing sheet model space was 2D just to avoid any potential for things happening in Z that should not.
Caching the Drawing models should avoid the printing delay. Please see: ABD SS6 - Best Practices - Cached Visible Edges
