CR Option for Walls to relate to Floor Manager storey height

As an avid fan of the floor manager I have wanted to be able to set my wall heights to the storey height I am working at set in the Floor Manager. Buildings often have differing storey heights and given that we have input this information into the floor manager already it is frustrating that we have to repeatedly change wall heights from the default part or now dg setting.

With the advent of v8i and the excellent new compound wall tool which allows us to switch between one and another type of compound wall this has even become more important. At present if I have a building with the same external envelope construction but three different storey heights I need 3 different compound wall types to achieve it. Every time I modify a coumpound wall I need to do everything in triplicate too.

If I was able set the outer leaf, say to match the storey height and the inner leaves to honour their relationship as defined in the compound wall definition, hey presto I would be able to use a single compound wall defnition!

 Any thoughts?

  • Robert, I think this is an excellent suggestion and is in line with what we would like to do. In the definition of a compound wall the user should have the option to assign each wall layer height as either fixed or variable. During placement, you can assign the compound wall a height, any wall layer with a variable height assignment will adopt that height (base offsets will be retained). There could easy be another option to use the active floor height like offered in the stair tool to define wall height. I know the next posting to this thread will also want the relationship between the wall and the floor to be persistent and we understand we will need to address that as well. The bad news is I cannot tell you yet where these feature/functionality lies within the development schedule, we are still pursuing a Select Update for the v8i release, which we hope to have out by the end of Q1 2009.

  • Jeff this is great news about the walls being tied to the floor levels. I would love to see similar functionality as in Revit where if the floor moves the wall height is adjusted.

On the compound wall issue, why is it that in the Place Wall settings, the height and width of a compound wall are disable and cannot be edited unlike the single wall? and changing the "Editable" value in the DG Editor has no affect?

  • I'm not Jeff, but then again who is?  :)     Anyhow... I'll take a stab at it.

I think because compound walls can have varying heights, and because those heights are defined in the part definition associated with the catalog item, the catalog property called "height" becomes unecessary / meaningless.  Try this: Copy an existing compound wall catalog item and change its default height value to something extreme.  What you should see is that the wall places exactly as the original since it's the definition that defines the height(s).   Or to put in another way, compound walls really have a "heights" property vs "height".

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
