Why can't I modify my Detail Symbol Styles ?

I am experimenting with modifying DetailingSymbolStyles.dgnlib to reflect what we use in our office. But it doesn't seem to work.

I have created a Default user and modified the file located at every place I can find.

C:\AECOsim-V8i-SS6\WorkSpace\Projects\Default\support\dataset\dgnlib

C:\AECOsim-V8i-SS6\WorkSpace\Projects\Default\dgnlib

C:\AECOsim-V8i-SS6\WorkSpace\BuildingDatasets\Dataset_ANZ\dgnlib

No matter what I try, it always defaults to the delivered styles.

On the left is my modified Section symbol, and on the right is what happens when I create the section.

And this is what I see when I check on which cell is being used. The list shows all the cells 3 times.

Does this mean that it is showing the content of three files ? And if so, where are the extra files.

Is there something I am missing, and if so, what ?

Regards

Michael

  • I have removed all the "DetailingSymbolStyles.dgnlib" files out of my search path, and removed the Detail Symbol model spaces from "DrawingSeed_Architectural.dgnlib" So in theory I shouldn't be able to find any Detail Symbol cells.

But that isn't the case. Where do these come from ?

  • All new reply (I deleted some earlier ones). I installed the New Zealand dataset for CONNECT Edition and simply moved the DetailingSymbolStyle.dgnlib out of the dgnlib folder (I usually create a folder under there named 'Holding Tank' to move any of those dgnlibs to test and them move them back as needed). I get the same results as Steve did, I cannot open those cell drop down lists.

When you say you are deleting the cells form the DrawingSeed_*.dgnlib do you mean you are deleting the symbols out of the sheet models? Are you seeing actual models of the cells?

If you have successfully creating your detailing style, create your own drawing seeds and go into those sheets and select the drawing title, section cut, elevation symbols and right-press and select properties. In that properties dialog you can change those symbols to use your detailing style. Maybe this will keep from having to delete them.

One thing I do when looking at any dgnlibs is to set my Workspace to Examples and WorkSet to MetroStation (a MicroStation example, if it is installed) and browse over to open a dgnlib. Then I can see what things are in that file, like detailing styles. By opening the files in the example workspace I am not loading all the ABD libraries.

Finally, I found that the detailing styles want to exist in those drawing seed dgnlib files. I tried creating my custom detailing style in the DetailingStyleStyles.dgnlib and found they get copied into the seeds. So, I utilized the Detailing Symbols File>Export and File>Import to get the correct one into the seeds. A little extra work, but once I had it done I am off and running.

I've installed the ANZ Datasets, but I'm mainly interested in Microstation mode.

I'm seeing the actual models of the cells in C:\AECOsim-CE\AECOsimBuildingDesigner\Default\Dgnlib\DrawComp\en\DrawingSeed.dgnlib, and not in any datasets. If I delete these model spaces, then I can't open the cell drop down list.

If we're supposed to be using DetailingSymbolStyles.dgnlib for the cells, then why are they in DrawingSeed.dgnlib, and why is this file hardcoded to use for detailing symbols ?

This is for both CONNECT and V8i.

    Michael.

  • I've worked out how to use a custom dgmlib file in CONNECT.

I delete the model spaces from C:\AECOsim-CE\AECOsimBuildingDesigner\Default\Dgnlib\DrawComp\en\DrawingSeed.dgnlib.

Create a new file C:\AECOsim-CE\Configuration\WorkSpaces\Default\WorkSets\Default\Standards\Dgnlib\DetailingSymbolStyles.dgnlib that has my custom cells.

This works until I have to do an update, when I then have to delete the model spaces from the delivered DrawingSeed.dgnlib again.

But this doesn't work for V8i.

I can create C:\AECOsim-V8i-SS6\WorkSpace\Projects\Default\dgnlib\DrawingSeed.dgnlib without the model spaces and C:\AECOsim-V8i-SS6\WorkSpace\Projects\Default\dgnlib\DetailingSymbolStyles.dgnlib with the model spaces, or create only DrawingSeed.dgnlib with the model spaces.

But, for some reason V8i has an additional file. C:\AECOsim-V8i-SS6\WorkSpace\BuildingDatasets\Dataset_ANZ\dgnlib\DetailingSymbolStyles.dgnlib. And this is the default file AECOsim V8i uses. If I delete it, then i can use C:\AECOsim-V8i-SS6\WorkSpace\Projects\Default\dgnlib\DetailingSymbolStyles.dgnlib.

But when I restart my computer, I get this

and the file is back. And because it's a delivered file, if I edit it, I have to do this every time I update.

I can get around this by renaming the model spaces in C:\AECOsim-V8i-SS6\WorkSpace\Projects\Default\dgnlib\DetailingSymbolStyles.dgnlib, and reassgning all the cells.

But this is a lot of work for something that should be simple.

Why does Bentley make it so hard to like their software.

  • Hi Micky,

The CONNECT help  does states that:

The following DGN libraries are installed in ..\Default\dgnlib\ folder of AECOsim Building Designer's program directory:

    • ..\DrawComp\en\DrawingSeed.dgnlib — contains the default drawing seeds, display styles, and detailing symbol styles needed to create drawings.

Also, per this wiki, MS_DETAILINGSYMBOLS has been deprecated in MicroStation CONNECT Edition, and  _USTN_PROJECTDATA has been superseded by _USTN_WORKSETROOT.

    I haven't researched this in-depth, but MS_DGNLIBLIST does point to both AECOsimBuildingDesigner\Default\Dgnlib\DrawComp\ and $(_USTN_WORKSPACESTANDARDS)Dgnlib\*.dgnlib, $(_USTN_WORKSETSTANDARDS)Dgnlib\*.dgnlib and $(_USTN_WORKSPACESTANDARDS)DgnLib\*.dgnlib.

  • I suppose everything is in the "help".

You just have to know where to look and what to search for.
