The Connect edition Items dialog lacks the detail that v8i used to have.
See below, I want to select all columns of a certain size within my model. Items just displays a list of identical catalog types. I can use details to see the information, but this does not allow me to select them. It places a small arrow in the items list next to the item name, but you cannot select from this.
In v8i(which is how it should work, ie actually usefully), the items dialog displays as a tree, allowing you to drill down into the catalogs and items to select the correct sections/cells/catalog items.

I am aware that this is probably a base Microstation issue, however, it is in Aecosim where this type of information and selection is most common
I'll request you to file a Service Request so that an Enhancement Request can be raised on this.
So yet again, Bentley remove functionality, then I have to request a mythical enhancement to restore the removed functionality. If by chance enough other people do the same it may possibly be restored at some point down the line, say 3/6/9/12months later, who knows.
There are enhancements I have filed years ago that have never seen the light of day and I have no idea if they are even considered.
Can kicked well down the road as usual.
This is not an enhancement but a restoration of necessary functionality
Hi Duncan,
Items/Explorer always listed the items based on the names of the Catalog Items and not Individual Section Names. This was the case in V8i too, and hence is not an instance of deprecated functionality.
An Enhancement can be raised for a request to incorporate this feature.

Apologies Tathagata, you are correct re Section Names. It would be a simple and extremely useful addition though.
I mainly came across this issue as U4 will not let me update the column catalog without updating the catalog section. ie, I am unable to deselect the section name to update a bunch of different columns at the same time as I could in V8. U4 will change the section and rotation of every column.
When changing Catalog Items it's simply picking up the DataGroup property values for the "destination" item - Section Name is one of those properties, and rotation is defined by the Family + Part which is the other property. If you have a workflow that requires you to change Catalog Items yet not take on that destination item's default property values, I would suggest filing an SR with those details so an Enhancement can be filed.
Hi Steve,
It is quite a common workflow and I was able to do so in V8i without issue. When updating multiple catalog items, you are able to select the fields that you want to update, selecting the values of either the new or old item. I should be able to deselect the section name/rotation.
In v8i this was done by ticking or unticking the field. IN CE I think this is just not working properly. I think it is a defect, rather than an enhancement that is required.
After further investigation I've found that this is consistent across all applicable component types. For example, if you follow the same process with walls and outright change the Catalog Item from one wall to another, it will pick up that new destination item's default height, part assignment, etc., just like Structural members. Given this consistency it would appear to be an intentional change. The help also displays these blue highlighted properties in the New Value column:
https://docs.bentley.com/LiveContent/web/AECOsim%20Building%20Designer%20Help-v5/en/ChangeType.html
Sorry but I disagree. the help you linked to actually illustrates my point.
Example below from selecting multiple walls to change catalog item. When selecting different walls for, the change wall properties displays varies as component type, and any other values which vary. When selecting a new type to change to, I then deselect the new default height/width, or any other fields I do not want to change.
With compound cell doors and windows I am able to change the catalog type without updating the associated cell.
PAZ doors and windows do not allow keeping the default cell, however they do allow keeping all other variations
Modify properties for beams/columns just does not work correctly
When first selecting the columns/beams the properties box is consistent, showing varies for location, height, section name, on selecting the new catalog item I can again select to keep the location, section name and height, however, when applying, an error for no section name defined appears, and then it changes all selected items to the same section name as the first selected item. height and location do not change.
Hope that's clear
