Selection with display rules

Hi

I've tested out the new display rules in Aecosim connect and it's a great way to filter out walls, slabs and so on when I try to focus on other stuff. But when I select elements, even though they are not seen, they get selected. Is this really the expected behavior? Seems it's very easy to make mistakes.

Here I've created a rule to only display walls:

But even though I can only see about 5 selected elements, there are 210 other hidden elements. So when I chose no rule I can see al this, that I didn't see at the time of selection, got selected with my fence.

Robert

  • Hi Robert,

I cannot seem to reproduce this.  When I have a Display Rule hiding specific elements - concrete columns in my case - if a select an area (right-left cross/selection window) where those hidden columns exist but are hidden, they aren't included in the total count in the status bar (the visible elements are) and are not highlighted when I turn off the display rule while the other elements are still selected.    How exactly are you selecting the element(s)?

  • , did we really misunderstand each other as Marc says? You say you don't get those hidden elements selected when using display rules, right?

  • Hi Robert,

Sorry about that...    I created the attached video yesterday to show how I was not seeing the same results, but I've only now realized that you are not applying the Display Rule within a Drawing, but rather the 3D Model.  A bit of apples and oranges there!

So as Marc wrote please file a Service Request with support if you'd like to see the selection behavior changed.

  • Ok, I see. So the purpose of display rules are for creating drawings?

A new feature for displaying certain content within the file I'm working in would be a great one. Similar arrangement but in another tool. Easy for users to change depending on their needs.

  • Hi Robert,

Display rules can be used in any context where you wish to modify the display of elements, here are a couple of examples:

CONNECT Edition - Display Rules - Highlighting Demolitions

Colour your models Heat Map style

    Robert,

As Marc wrote, since Display Rules are linked to Display Styles they can be used in any context.  My initial focus on the Drawing aspect was simply because that is where I have personally see Display Rules used - as an extra layer of control beyond Part resymbolization and Arch/Mech/Structural Drawing Rules.

As a possible interim workaround, you could use Select By Attributes to create a Criteria Set choosing only your component of choice, say slabs, use the tool's Exclude option to select everything but those slabs.  Next, create a new Named Group from those elements.   From that point on you could use the Named Group as the Display Set.   From a quick test here I don't think you can select hidden elements using this method.
