[OBD CE] Admin guide/tutorial for CE

Hi,

Most of the learning materials for OBD CE administration on the Bentley Learn website at the moment seems to be focusing on upgrading from V8i to CE. Is there any learning material available for OBD CE administration that doesn't require V8i experience?

Best regards,

Tuan Le

  • Hi, a great deal of the admin for OpenBuildings is the same as V8i. The main changes are in the structure of the configuration, have you found these learning paths?

BIM Management for OpenBuildings Designer (AECOsim) Learning Path

Connect Workflows - OpenBuildings Designer (AECOsim) Learning Path

Special Interest Group - OpenBuildings Designer (AECOSIM) Learning Path

This set of MicroStation courses is useful too, as OpenBuildings contains everything that is in MicroStation:

Managing MicroStation CONNECT Edition Learning Path

    Please ask further questions here.

Another place to discuss admin questions is the Product Administration Forum.

  • Hi Marc,

I've seen those learning paths. All of them seems to be built upon V8i experience. So essentially I can't approach OBD CE administration without drawing from Microstation CE and/or AECOSim V8i experience. I thought OBD CE is supposed be a standalone product from Microstation and V8i. Getting into specific,

BIM Management for OpenBuildings Designer (AECOsim) Learning Path

The prerequisite for this learning path is that you must already know V8i administration, otherwise, there's nothing in there that can give you the knowledge to fully administer a OBD CE system.

Connect Workflows - OpenBuildings Designer (AECOsim) Learning Path

Irrelevant as it's about working in the cloud. I'm stuck on the ground for now.

Managing MicroStation CONNECT Edition Learning Path

It's fine to reference that for the basics configuration, but what about the "Building" aspects? datagroup? drawings rules? family/part? and so on. Would I still need to go back AECOSim V8i training material to find those? What if someone has absolutely zero prior knowledge of V8i administration and would like to understand OBD CE inside out. What should I advise that person to do?

    Best regards,

  • Hi Tuan,

OpenBuildings is the latest version of AECOsim, many things are largely unchanged from V8i including the essentials of DataGroup, Family &Parts, Drawing Rules, etc.

While these have all been refined and enhanced in various ways material covering them from V8i SS6 or later will be applicable. We are working through the many wiki pages on these topics updating to OpenBuildings and are happy to respond to questions on specific pages when asked. Such questions help us to prioritise effort.

Our training team are similarly working through learning content, many of those courses have been updated recently. I will ask them to suggest further links in this thread.

CONNECT Advisor is another route to training material and help from multiple sources.

  • Hi Tuan,

I am going to point you back to the BIM Management for OpenBuildings Designer Learning Path.  I don't think you need V8i knowledge to follow these courses.  The first course, BIM Management 301: Installation and Upgrade Guide, is a step by step guide on installing OpenBuildings Designer with a custom configuration and then setting up a WorkSet template and company WorkSpace.  There is one exercise that shows how to migrate existing V8i customizations to the CONNECT Edition WorkSpace, but you would just skip that.

Once this framework is set up you can customize Family and Parts and DataGroup Catalog items.  This is the A302 course that is not yet completed or posted.  However, I would suggest that you view the course: 3D and BIM Essentials for New Users course which gives a good overview of the Family/Part and DataGroup system.

The third course, BIM Management 303: Customizing Dynamic Views to Optimize Drawing Production, shows  how to create drawing standards such as text and dimension styles, detailing symbol styles, annotation tags, display styles, drawing rules and then create a drawing template using those new drawing standards.  I don't think any V8i knowledge is required to take this course.

The pre-requisite for all these courses would be a basic understanding of how to use the software, so definitely I would recommend first taking the 3D and BIM Essentials for New Users and at least one of the QuickStarts if you are new to using OpenBuildings Designer (AECOsim).

I recently updated both the BIM Management courses, so please take another look.  I would also be happy to schedule a Live Instructor led training of the two BIM Management courses, that way an instructor is available to answer specific questions you might have.
