If we export a project with multiple buildings and floors to IFC (tested IFC 4.0 and IFC 2.3) the project structure gets lost and all objects assigns to one floor of one building. Is it possible to preserve the object structure during IFC export? This works perfectly with other BIM software.
(using AECOsim Building Designer V8i)
Hi Ole,
When exporting, have you used the Spatial Structure > Assign button to check that the expected site/building and floors are included?
Thank you for your answer! In Floor manager, there is one building with three floors. I put some walls in each floor. Then i go to IFC-Export and choose "Roomstructure" and the window "Assign Models to Spatial Containment" opens.
There is only one ".dgn-Design Model" listed, so im not able to choose more than one floor. How can i split my project into more ".dgn-Design Models"?
You're welcome!
I had to do a little testing to remind myself of the details... Try checking the box labeled "Inherit Floor Assignment from Reference Parent" in the Assign Models to Spatial Containment dialog. Does that give you what you were looking for?
No, it didn't change my IFC-output.
Do you know, how to add more models into one project?
I cannot seem to make it not work... So I was hoping that toggle might make a difference since it wasn't otherwise working for you. Is that "sloped roof" floor applicable to the elements you are exporting?
In regards to your question about models do you mean more DGN files in the project folder, more models in a specific DGN file, or something else? The first can be accomplished using the traditional File > New command, while for the second you can choose File > Models > "Create a new model" icon with the 2D/3D settings as needed.
Ole,
Is all your geometry in a single model?
If so, you will only be able to select a single floor. You should model separate floors in separate models and reference into a master model to export. This will allow you to select floors based on the reference models.
Alternatively, if you were able to upgrade to Aecosim Connect edition, there is an option to export based on element height.

Apparently I completely forgot what I was looking at... Sorry about that!
Correct, Duncan, in order to have per-floor based components in an IFC file those components need to exist in separate DGN files that are referenced together - one floor per file. in V8i. Or, you could upgrade to CONNECT Edition for enhanced functionality.
Your first solution is perfect for me, thank you!
