Is it possible that variables from .paz files show up in the properties panel when they are not linked to properties in the datagroup explorer. I am discovering that the variables don't always appear as drop down lists in the datagroup explorer when I am making doors and that some variables seem to be read from the paz when they are not linked. Is this normal?

Yes. They show up in a different section in the properties panel when they are not connected to properties in the datagroup explorer.
If the variables don't appear in the drop down list of the datagroup explorer try restarting OpenBuildings Designer.

Thanks Sanchayan, I am trying to make doors but my variables are not neccesarily the same as those in ArchDoor. Is it too risky to add additional properties to ArchDoor. Will it make the program unstable?
I would suggest you to create your own property definition for the doors that you are trying to create. I would not recommend adding additional properties to ArchDoor.
