Place dimension on active level

I want to place dimensions on the active level using active symbology.

In the "dimension styles" dialog, "advanced" tab, "placement" section I am told to set the value of "Level" to "Level"

However, "Level" does not appear in the drop down list - only levels in the dgn file appear in the drop down list.

So, either there is a trick to set it to "Level" or it can't be done - which seems to be rather bizarre.

My current situation is that all dims are forced onto the level set in this variable.

By the way, I'm using AecoSIM v8i SS4.

  • Hi Fraser,

Even in CONNECT Edition the Dimension Styles dialog > Placement section requires an explicit level selection by name.

Can you describe the use case for wanting levels to be placed on whatever the active level might be at any given time?  This seems to go against any type of project or corporate based standards.

  • Hi Steve.

Fair enough. In this case the program is supplying erroneous information.

See screen shot which shows the message when the cursor hovers over "Level".

It clearly states that "If set to (Level) uses the active level".

Do I get a cash prize for spotting this ?

There are a million examples of when you might want to choose the dimension level.

I'm currently using the program as a tool to find discrepancies between 4 structural models,

so I'm placing many dimensions and want these to be on levels relevant to each particular model.

Please don't suggest a different workflow. This is the workflow I have chosen and I assumed the

program had the functionality to perform the task (I'm almost certain it did in the past)

  • Hi Fraser,

I'm hoping that someone more knowledgeable about dimensioning can make more sense of this, because as best I can tell it is working for me.   In the attached video I'm using Ss4 and changing the active level, and as you can see the dimensions being placed are following along.  I tried this in Ss5, Ss6 and CONNECT Edition as well, and all behaved the same.   This leads me to believe that there could some other setting (prefs, variable, etc) that is also contributing.
