OpenBuildings UK Dataset for OBD Update 6

Tried finding answers on the site but no luck yet, so apologies if this has been asked and replied to many times. During this lockdown, I thought I'd try learning the basics of OBD, so I downloaded Update 6. Only dataset is the US version.

  • I followed the Wiki on making changes via the Control Panel, ticked the UK dataset box and it then says on completion that it has been modified.
  • Open OBD, no UK dataset.
  • Go back to Control Panel method, UK dataset unticked again....I have done this about three times.

Did I miss something in the intial set up? Installation took a heck of a long time so loathe to uninstall and then reinstall!

Was Update 6 the only file I should have installed or is there a base installation first, then Update 6?

And oooh, final question, is it possible to self train completely using the learning paths rather than buying in training? I have been using Microstation since the early 90s and am fairly proficient in 3D modelling and know my way around basic customisations of interfaces and configuration settings.

Thanks in anticipation...

Keith Cameron

  • Hi Keith,

With regard to all your installation queries this wiki might be of help and remember to run a clean re-installation.
Regarding our latest Release Update click here.
You may explore our LEARNserver ,have a look at "How to find training in the LEARN server" and let us know your feedback.

    Thanks & Regards!

  • Ok will uninstall and reinstall more carefully this time, many thanks for your help.

  • is it possible to self train completely using the learning paths rather than buying in training?

Yes, especially if you have previous 3d knowledge. The material on Learn is pretty good starting point. I would start with the Connect verion Learning Paths... but there will be some tools that will require looking at the older V8i material. These would include tools like Compound Cells and the dreaded Parametric Cell Studio which is slowly being replaced by the new Functional Cells at Mstn level. Unfortunately, OBD's doors are PCS objects so some knowledge of PCS is inevitable in the medium term.

In fact, a number of OBD / Triforma tools are being re-written at platform level (Perforators and Named Presentations).

Also, a lot of good stuff in the wiki sections as well to specific problems. OBD has quite a number or quirks that will stump new users that are not documented anywhere else.

  • Hi Dominic, many thanks for your reply. I had a 2 day TriForma course back in the day and dabbled in some basic 3D modelling with AECOSim mainly to try out the elevation and section 2D creations. But it's been a while and all very daunting looking at this now!

  • Feel for you!

We often have to incorporate newbies on live jobs who get a maximum of 1-2 days training. Most don't. They will normally have some limited exposure to Mstn if you are lucky. The path would normally be roughly based on the Infinite Skills Microstation V8i CDs.

    1. Level 1
    2. Level 2
    3. 3D

    then followed by:-

    4. Selected LEARN paths for Aecosim / OBD.

The problem is that this takes a long time. Most don't past No.2 and jump straight into using the Aecosim tools and muddle through due to time pressure. It usually takes at least a month of hammering away to be reasonably proficient.

We do from time-to-time have the luxury of having an external trainer in but they barely scratch the surface and too expensive to engage for the time needed to make any real impact (besides the soft feedback that you get from the newbies taking the course). They also tend not to have the same level of backup materials like workbooks and handouts compared to what is available on LEARN.

I think that Bentley has responded by making a lot of learning material available for free, but it is still a very long and expensive process, which makes it difficult for small-to-medium sized firms to bear. Not sure what your situation is.

OTOH, learning OBD gives you both a BIM and CAD tool. With the upcoming improvements in rendering functionality, there are high hopes that you will not have to learn another app for most rendering requirements (at long last!).

R*vit + Rhino + addon to transfer stuff between them(!)+ BIM 360 + Enscape + Ideate BIMlink + NavisWorks (both R's are bad at federating external data for coordination) is also a long learning curve, especially for those same small-to-medium sized firms. I suspect a lot of them are putting the extra costs down to the price of upgrading from CAD to BIM workflows, but will... actually, who cares :-)

PS: Bentley's free View app looks like it will support Ref attachments which will hopefully spread some Mstn muscle memory about. Amazing how much coordination work really just involves loading and overlaying CAD data.
