Opening Building Designer Update 7

Good Morning

I have just tried to install the new update 7 and have run into a problem

I get this Failure after going through and selecting the correct dataset

I have installed the update 7 over update 6 with the same result.

Also done a uninstall of the program and fresh install with the same result.

Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong or missing

cheers

  • From your first screenshot is the S Drive perhaps a network mapped drive? If so you may want to check you have the appropriate permissions to the location.

  • yes the S:/ is a mapped network drive and yes i do have all the appropriate permissions to the location

  • Hi Ben,

To support the ProStructures technology that now underlies OBD's structural tools we copy additional content into an existing configuration and replace the dataset.cfg file with a new one that includes additional configuration statements required to locate ProStructures resources. (I'm assuming that we simply replace the file, I'll check to confirm this. If we write the required statements to the existing file it is possible that different permissions might apply.)

If you install U7 and datasets locally you will find the required content on your local drive that could then be copied to the network. Note that there are other changes to the datasets listed in the delta change document in each dataset root folder.

    Which dataset(s) are you installing?

  • Good Morning

I am trying to install the New Zealand Dataset.

If I install U7 locally and copy over the dataset files to my network, will U6 program still function as normal. Just because we have 4 other computers using the network files and they wont be upgrading for a couple months due to being in the middle of a job.

    Regards

    Ben

  • Hi Ben,

The application and dataset versions should match.

If you need to run two versions (and currently only one CONNECT version at a time can be installed on a machine) we recommend separate Custom Configurations for each.

You should maintain your current configuration for the Update 6 users.

Here is an outline of one suggested approach to this upgrade (these are notes I'm drafting for a new wiki so are incomplete but should offer a direction, hopefully the wiki article will be completed by early next week):

    Outline steps

    1. We recommend testing updates to OpenBuildings Designer with a new version of any existing Custom Configuration before attempting any production rollout of the updated application.
Dataset content generally changes between updates, often only with minor changes, but sometimes these can be more significant.
This the case with Update 7 where we have added the resources required to support ProStructures technology that now underlies the structural modelling tools.
    2. To facilitate testing create a clone of your existing Custom Configuration at a convenient location that cannot be confused with the production location. (This can be a local drive, an admin only drive mapping, UNC path or even an external hard drive, all that is required is for the _USTN_CUSTOM_CONFIGURATION definition in "C:\ProgramData\Bentley\OpenBuildings CONNECT Edition\Configuration\ConfigurationSetup.cfg" to point to the test location.
    3. Install OBD and required datasets locally, setting the path to the test Custom Configuration during installation. (this can be edited once testing is complete to point to the production configuration). From Update 7 onwards
Do not open the application yet!
    4. Using the dataset delta document (found in the root folder of the dataset), file/folder comparisons applications and visual comparison identify the changes that need to be made to your custom configuration to update its content to match the current update.
In the case of Update 7 adding the changes needed to support ProStructures technology to your Custom Configuration will avoid the need for the Structural WorkSpace Upgrade Wizard to run when you first open the application to your upgraded Custom Configuration. Please refer to help topic
Home > OpenBuildings Structural > Structural Upgrade Utilities > Structural Dataset Upgrade for more details about this.

(I'm currently writing detailed steps to follow on from this outline, I hope these notes are useful in the meantime.)
