Microstation V8i Bentley Architecture File Corruption

Hello,

I have a very annoying problem, and I am considering changing to another software. The V8i platform has now corrupted two of my files. I get the general error message "send error report" and then i choose to ignore. Later i cannot save or export the file to make an backup. Microstation (BA) shuts down and then i get the error message that "unable to open design file" when i try to open the file again.

All my work is lost it seems, because there is no way to enter the design file. I add the error message and the twocorrupted files. Please tell meif there is a solution for this.

  • I posted something on this same topic sometime ago. I don't think I ever got an answer.

I concluded that the problem was related to my graphics card driver - I have a Nvidia Quadro FX4600 card. I was advised by a CAD support friend to downgrade to the Dell supplied driver from the latest Nvidia driver that I was using. This has more or less completely eliminated the problem.

I had a similar situation, files of 10MB or more that showed no elements. Steve, there is clearly something in these files, it woul dbe nice if we could get the back.

Martin posted the files. Did you try them ? Can you tell what went wrong?
Assuming you have better tools to investigate files than ordinary users.  And far more knowledge.

I wouldn't have a clue what is wrong with the files, but I would recommend choosing Abort if you're getting an exception error.  No telling what caused the error, or what the result will be if you continue...

  • Unfortunately, I personally do not have the know-how or tools to troubleshoot DGN files in this manner...  I believe there are ways to review a DGN in a non-graphic manner, but what that entails I would not know.

You can submit the files to Bentley Support for follow-up, but that does not necessarily guarantee an answer either.  While reviewing these type of files may confirm the existence of "corrupted" or bad data, from what I understand there is usually no way to determine *how* the files got that way.   And, if the corruption is in the DGN header (if that's the right term), the file is most likely SOL.

That's why (IMHO) the bigger issue is determining why files end up in this state in the first place.  With the thousands and thousands of users we have, this scenario really is rare, so there's *something* contributing to the situation.  Like in Robert's case where the graphics card drivers were the determining factor.   Who would have thought....    :P

  • I have tried to press Abort when the error window appears, then microstation closes and the file is safe. Continuing working once microstation has become unstable and given you an error message later caused the problem. Always aborting prevents the program from arriving at that point.

I might add that I have a Acer TravelMate 5720, for which there are no new drivers since the release of the laptop. That might be the big disadvantage to me, that i dont have the same accesses to software updates as desktop users.

Anyhow, I dont seem to experience the problem working in this way. And I have learned my lesson to always make backups.

  • Thanks for following up, Martin.

Once you've experienced an exception error, I'd imagine it's possible that the information being cached is in a less than satisfactory state.  And, if that data is written back to the file, then I suppose that anything goes...

Anyhow, it seems like you have a much better handle on it now.  That's a good thing!
