MS Update 8, closing when entering into a design or model file

Hi there

Having an issue when entering to a existing model / drawing file. it will just shut the program down , without going into the model / file.

This happens when you shut the program down and double click on the desktop shortcut. So starting fresh , it doesn't do it when you go into another file without closing the program.

This is only happening to U8 machines.

Attacked is the front screen , i click on the right workset then the file i want to go into , then its a desktop screen or it will open up .

  • Hi Ben,

the subject of your question is confusing: You stated you use MicroStation (MS Update 8), but your screen capture is about OpenBuildings Designer :-(  I recommend to change the question to correct format "[OBD CE U8] Closing when entering...".

it will just shut the program down

Is Exception dialog opened? Is Exception log + memory dump created? Also important is whether any information is written to Windows system or Windows application log.

This is only happening to U8 machines.

How this version was installed? As an upgrade from older version or as a new installation?

Did you try e.g. to reset / remove user preferences file or the whole folder, where preferences are stored?

  • Sorry , its is OBD CE U8 .

I dont get any dialog box popping up , if i get a dialog box i then know its going to open.

It is a install over an U6 install.

i have reset / removed ( prefs ) folder with no result. the ( prefs ) folder is a basic version before people change the appearance and feel of it

    Regards Ben

I mentioned Exception dialog, which is not related to "going to open design file" in any way.

It's unfortunate, because exception log provides details why application crashed.

It is a install over an U6 install.

Maybe this is the reason. Or, alternatively, custom workspace is broken (from OBD perspective) and cannot be opened.

I am not sure what is the best solution in your situation:

    • I would recommend to backup your workspace and data and to uninstall OBD completely, including complete removal all used folders (Program Files, Program Data, AppData in user profile etc.). When OBD is installed from scratch, to test delivered workspace and when it works, to add your workspace.
    • It's also possible to configure Windows to create memory dump automatically when the application (like MicroStation or ORD) crashes. But it requires specific knowledge and help support and developers to analyze the issue, but not to fix your installation.

  • Hi Ben,

Does OBD open when you create a new file?

If so are you able to attach an existing file as a reference (just as a diagnostic step)?

You say this is only happening to U8 machines, implying that other machines are still running U6. We made significant changes to the configuration content after U6 to support the incorporation of ProStructures functionality. If this content and related configuration is not present that will affect application behaviour.

Did you set up a U8 Configuration alongside your U6 or are your U8 machines attempting to use U6 WorkSpace and WorkSets?

    Marc

  • Marc , i have setup my U8 alongside my U6 workspace, so the U6 machines arent looking / touching my U8 workspace.

i have a text file with the windows event pasted in it , its saying

    - Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Bentley\OpenBuildings CONNECT Edition\OpenBuildingsDesigner\OpenBuildingsDesigner.exe
    - Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\System32\ucrtbase.dll

i can send the whole text file
