Hello All,
I already searched the Bentley Communities Wiki as well as the Forum, but I couldn't find an answer to my question.
Is it possible to save an existing drawing as a seed file - preferably adding to one of the existing "...Seed...dgn" files? It would be very similar as a "Save as template" function that exists in many softwares like Office, ...
As far as I understand the only way to add Seeds is to create a new model, either in one of the existing "..Seed...dgn" files or by creating a new .dgn file altogether.
Thank you in advance!
Hello Johan,
Yes, we can create custom seed file for OpenBuildings Designer. I am sharing two links below, please have a look-
1. https://communities.bentley.com/products/building/building_analysis___design/w/building_analysis_and_design__wiki/30985/what-are-some-differences-between-the-various-dgn-seed-files
2. https://docs.bentley.com/LiveContent/web/OpenBuildings%20Designer%20Help-v4/en/GUID-FCB5EFF6-3E07-859B-36A4-899FF7943054.html

Thank you for your answer Arindam.
In both links I don't really see any reference to using an existing (project) DGN file to start this seed file from. I get that when creating a new Seed file from scratch it works as described. But in my case I have a project DGN file containing a lot of Geometry, some drawings, ...
In this case should I save the file as seed, then remove all the geometry and unwanted models? Is geometry "copied" from the seed file when creating a new drawing model (with the Drawing Creation tools for floor plans, sections, elevations)?
Second question, is it somehow possible to copy a drawing model from one DGN file to another? That way I could gradually add new 'templates' to one company-owned Seed file. In my opinion this would be preferable over multiple Seed files, from a point of view of managing when files/settings are shared with multiple users.
Hi Johan,
Depends what you mean by Seed?
Any DGN can be saved as a seed file, but seed files are only intended to contain the minimum of shared content in V8i/CONNECT applications.
If you are referring to Drawing Seed Templates that has a process to follow to link together the various resources that combine to control drawing output. The training course BIM Management 303: Customizing Dynamic Views to Optimize Drawing Production is the best resource to look at for that.

Hi Marc,
I am indeed referring to Drawing Seed Templates, thank you for pointing out the difference!
Looks like there is a little more to it than just clicking a button 'Save as ...". I'll read up on the link you sent and come back if I should have any more questions.
