Disable compound slabs in U9?

Hello,

Is there a possibilty to disable the compound slabs in Update9 and use the "legacy" slab functionality?

I have a need for editing the form, putting slope, ... more than for a compound slap at the moment. And the "Modify Solid Entity" tools are not working on Compound Slabs.

  • Hi Johan,

Thanks for reaching out to us. I have tested this issue at my end and found out that editing the form, putting the slop option only applicable for MS slab. For Architectural and Structural Slab you can not use the 'Modify Slope' option. But you can surely modify their shapes by dragging their edge handle. Here is a short video about it.

  • Of all the Community comments on the new "improved" Compound Slab tool, this appears to be the best to jump into, as it is from several months ago when we first identified the problem in update 9.1

    - the loss of the original Slab tool is unacceptable and inconsistent with established Bentley practice that allows for simple to become complex IF required by Users
    - that is, we can place a Wall (as a structural type or architectural type or cladding type) and if needed we can define a Compound Wall (with multiple layers, each with different family/part) - we don't do that very often, but it is an option for detailed modelling - IF required by Users
    - Assemblies appears to be another new option delivered by Bentley for Users to manage complex arrangements of simpler objects - IF required by Users

    - we have added Cladding to the Catalog for a variety of applied wall finishes that we model separate to the base construction - and we setup the Wall tool to manage placement - we like the Wall tool - it is the most useful tool for quick and efficient placement of linear objects
    - likewise we have added BeamsArchitectural, Ceiling, and Flooring to the Catalog (each with appropriate IFC overrides for exporting) - and we setup the Slab tool to manage placement - we like the Slab tool - it is the most useful tool for quick and efficient placement of irregular shaped objects
    - and we have deprecated from the delivered dataset Catalog several Slab types that are inconsistent with this approach
    - now we need to add the original Slab tool back into the Ribbon bar using the historical key-in?

    - we should not need to go to that trouble - the original Slab tool should be retained on the Ribbon bar - the optional Compound Slab tool should be clearly identified separately
    - we are not interested in migrating our established Catalog items to suit the Compound Slab tool
    - Bentley needs to fix this - perhaps release 9.2 - there are other fixes required before we can transition with confidence

  • Hi Ross,

My 2cents (for what it's worth):

"Wall" vs "Compound Wall" uses the same technology. They are both Triforma, where the "Compound wall" uses the Family/Part to define it's layers and not the DG system (as with compound slab).

"Compound slab" on the other hand uses 'Smart solid' contrary to the old slabs using Triforma. I believe that is the reason why Bentley doesn't offer them side-by-side.

Related to catalogs, they will need to be updated from "Slab" to "Compound slab" at some point, even if they are only single layer slabs. When to do that is a user choice indeed. For me there are also important things missing from the compound slab to completely rely on it, but it looks that development is really investing into expanding the Compound Slab. I'm more hopeful for U10 than U9.2, but we'll see :)
