Is it Possible to Modify Building Element Info for Multiple Elements at One Time?

So I was able to modify a single Element's Building Element Info using the tool of the same name, but after selecting a large group of Elements by Layer, I don't appear to have that ability. That is unless I want to change them one by one, which I obviously do not.

As far as why I want to do this - well some jackwagon designer decided to model their piping as generic garbage and I'd like to port it over to Revit, but I can't do that because all of the piping has no Family assigned. It also has pretty much no metadata other than its Level/Layer assignment. Upon exporting to IFC I end up with pipes that are Generic Models (somewhat useless in Revit).

I acknowledge that I am an idiot and there may be some extremely obvious reason why this doesn't work, or why another method works better. So please feel free to club me in the brains with that information.

Thanks friends.

  • Zach,

Which property you want to change for piping ?, Since there are many other tools to help you out. Building Element Info is certainly not the tool to solve that purpose.

You can select and use 'Modify Properties' if you want to change Datagroup properties of pipes.

If you want to bulk edit Element attributes like Color, Style, Weight etc, you can use 'Change Element Attribute' tool.

If you want to change Part and Family you can use 'Apply Part' tool.

Please let us know so that we can suggest you appropriate tool.

    HTH,

    Thanks and Regards,

  • Thank you Sandeep and Sayan. This was just a noob question - needed to dig further to understand how to use the software. Apologies.

Hopefully my ignorance will help someone else searching to do the same thing. I was trying to convert a DGN into an IFC with the correct Categories still intact, so when I would open the IFC in Revit I'd see more than just Generic Models (default catch-all Category for undefined IFC Elements).

The solution, correct me if there is a better one, was to go to the Data/Reporting ribbon, and use the Add Data tool. I was trying to get Revit Pipes, so I clicked the drop down on the Add Instance Data window and selected StraightPIpe. The Add Data Tool actually allows you to select multiple instances, which was quite helpful with the snake's wedding of pipe I had. Upon opening the IFC I exported after doing that, I had Pipes in the correct Category.

The pipes were however still just faceted CAD-imports embedded in a Family and had no schedulable properties, but those are issues outside the scope of the question above.

I now understand that having the Workspace and Workset of the DGN is also paramount in getting any sort of intelligence/schedulable properties in the exported IFC. I was laughably missing this rather obvious bit of information.

    Thanks again.

  • Hi Zach,

    No worries!

Yes, Add Data tool under Data/Reporting ribbon allows us to select multiple instances as per our requirement.
