Electrical Revit export to OpenBuildings

Hello,

I would like export an electrical model to Microstation from Revit. The Revit DGN export is not exporting in 3D, cable trays are only shown as 2D lines, fittings or fixtures are not exported at all.

Is there any method to export electrical families so I can use  those in Microstation?

Thank you!

    You should post this in the OBD forum.

    However, Revit CANNOT export to a 3d DGN, it can only export to 2d DGN.  To do this you will need to export via IFC. and then import then IFC into your DGN file

  • Hi Zoltan,

    What are you trying to achieve with the model in OBD (or Microstation)?

    I think the best way to export from Revit is by using IFC format. It will export everything, both Civil and MEP content in a good way. Then you can either

    • Reference the IFC file into OBD/MS => If you only need it as an underlay and not going to make changes;
    • Use File => Import => IFC (works in both OBD as well as MS). You'll lose all the "intelligence"/BIM data, but geometry should convert just fine:

    • Use the key-in "IFCIN" (only in OBD). I haven't had much luck with this the couple times I tried using it. Should do a better job converting BIM data and classes to OBD elements, compared to File => Import. If you want to know more, I second Ian to look on the OBD forum.

    There are a couple of alternatives:

    • Export DWG from Revit => This will contain 3D geometry but no BIM data
    • Convert the Revit model to an iModel, either with the Revit plugin (until Revit 2021 if I'm not mistaken) or by using the iTwin services. I'm not sure if there is a workflow to convert iModel to DGN file. If not, this is strictly a read-only workflow just as the first suggestion with IFC file.

    I hope this helps you a bit closer to achieving your goals!
