library components

Is there any way to design prefabricated structures using the library components in Open Building Designer software?

  • Hello Meenaa,

Can you please explain more about your requirements? You can definitely create cells and then have them placed as objects inside OBD.

  • Hi Meenaa,

Prefab buildings cover a lot of ground. What level or kind of prefab structures are you looking at?

    1. Design++ may be of interest of you are looking for very deep automation. Runs on top of both Mstn and autocad. Used to automate prefab steel buildings.

    2. ICARF also has some impressive prefab factory envelope automation.

3.Progenio Max also has some interesting direct to fabrication functionality for fit out and furniture.

    4. OBD also has GC which provides very useful way to script generative components.

    5. ProStructures also provides a macro language which has been used to provide smart objects and detail libraries for Electrical sub station structures.

A prefab solution suggests that you need to go beyond the generic components and tools that the mainstream bim apps offer ootb.

    1. Usually a lot of domain knowledge that has to be elicited and automated due to the additional level of detail and engineering needed. Mainstream bim tools do not go very far here.

    2. Also, most bim tools do not incorporate the machining and processing restrictions and requirements that prefab entails.

    3. They also do not come with much in the way of PDM / PLM / ERP support needed for fabrication.

    4.?

All of which means a lot of customisation and connectivity work is required.
