Hi everyone,
At the moment I'm trying to figure out the relationship between the Dynamic Views and Dataset Explorer. On XM I usually set up cuts and run extractions with dataset rules to tell it what layers it should be put on, with V8i it doesn't seem to read those datasets. From what I've learned from trial and error it seems like this Dynamic View has no direct control over the layers and symbology of when it cuts through the 3D model. If this is true then really this Dynamic View doesn't really help structural 3d models with cuts through concrete and steel. My results at the moment is that when I create a Dynamic View through my model it just creates a Dynamic View with the layers it picks up from 3D model (basically whatever layer the model is modeled in). Is there a way to make it read the Drawing Symbology (‘F&R View Level') in the Dataset Explorer and make it come out on the correct layers? This is for Bentley Structural V8i, if there is no way to get it come out on the correct layers i might have to resort back to the old method of running extractions, although i would wish to utilize this dynamic view feature which is really neat.
Many thanks.
I don't quite understand what you are toing but I do use BV's with BA and some structural elements.
The BV is a cut at the point I have any any element iwthin that cut is cut or shown in forward or reflected view.
Whe I use Joist from the STructural application that is true also.
Then I can cut off levels if I wish but try and control everything from the part symbology - so very rerely do I cut off levels in the buiding view.

Im trying to create BV so that it comes out on the correct layers set in the Dataset Explorer > Drawing Symbology (Section Level and F&R View Level). Currently its not reading those settings and the BV is just producing the view with the layer it was modelled in the 3D model instead of using the Drawing Symbology settings in the Dataset Explorer.
With producing structural plans/sections I need the layers to be on a specific line weight, and also i need to see hidden lines behind slabs eg, piles, beams, walls, gaps in walls etc....
Expanding on what Duncan described, take one of your existing view and manually attach it to any view window. If it's truly a Building View, when opening the View Attributes dialog you should see the Building View tabs at the bottom.
Can someone clarify for me how well Drawing Views works for Bentley Structural, from what i read it seems to work ok for Bentley Architectural but Bentley Structural? For me Bentley Structural seems unable to produce a standard high enough to work with yet or am i wrong? some of the comments below I have attempted but.... it just seems different to what i can do and the options that i have when creating a view.
I am currently using Bentley Structural Ver. 08.11.05.38
