Hello
I've just downloaded and read through the Bentley Architecture Dataset Upgrade Guide 08.11.07
http://communities.bentley.com/products/building/building_analysis___design/f/5917/t/44787.aspx
Which seems very comprehensive and is no doubt "correct"
From what I can understand, this is for upgrading your 08.11.05 datasets. Though I haven't created any custom elements or entries in my dataset (it's just as is, in the downloaded version), it seems as though I still have to go through this process. Is that correct? I must say this seems long winded and shouldn't be necessary. Is there not a 08.11.07 compatible dataset being released soon?. One would have hoped that when there is a major release, or upgrade to BA, a fully compatible dataset was delivered at the same time. Though a well written and presented article (the BA Dataset Upgrade Guide), we shouldn't have to be copying and pasting files from this folder to that, and fiddling around editing the pcf and various cfgs.
If you're new to BA, are you supposed to download/install SS1, then download install an "out of date" dataset, then go through some fairly longwinded (the potential for making mistakes is quite significant) "upgrading" of the dataset for it to work properly.
I have Microstation SS1 and BA SS1 on my machine, ...... (both version 08.11.07), .... can we not have a dataset version 08.11.07 at the same time?

Hi Danny, I don't know that I can answer all your questions, but if you haven't customized *anything*, then you should be good to go... as long as you're referring to the delivered US_NCS dataset. That's what we included with the English language version of Bentley Architecture. And if that's the case, you should already have the equivalent dataset in place after installing 08.11.07.69.
Or am I way off?
Hello Steve
Well, ... I wouldn't call it way off ..... but I'm using the UK Uniclass Dataset (last version is from the 02 June 2009 and is version 08.11.05.61.
Though I haven't amended anything, from the "Dataset Upgrade Guide" it does seem there is a fair amount of upgrading/amending to be done, even if you are using the "standard" (as it was initially delivered) dataset. Mainly related to the dataset (and related seed files) not accommodating for various new features (no seed file for "Drawing" model for example) and things like "stairs" not being compatible with the new additions to the stairs tool/feature in the 08.11.07 version of BA.
My initial testing out/playing around with BA SS1 (and the UK dataset) would seem to confirm this.
I could understand if there was some updating/amending to be done is you had a custom dataset, as Bentley have no way of knowing what the user has done to their dataset and what/how it has been amended.
But if you are "starting from fresh" , then one would hope that after you have installed a "new product" (BA SS1 in this case), you don't then have to go and install an "out of date" product, which you then have to go through some fairly tricky and potentially error prone procedures to get it to work (most people in the architectural profession don't even know what and where a pcf is, let alone be able to edit one). I would note that even when you have downloaded the UK dataset, in Windows (Explorer), it doesn't tell you that this is version 08.11.05.61.
Realistically I can't see myself attempting to use BA on a real world project until I have a dataset that is compatible with the latest version

Hello Danny
The latest version of the UK UniclassGB dataset is 08.11.07.49, released 12/7/2009. I'm working with this dataset without problems.

Thanks for that ... that would help .... though I can't find this dataset in the usual Support\Bentley Library\Building\Datasets\English location. Could you tell me where you got this from?
Danny
The Datasets are in ................> Support > Downloads/My Select CD > Enhancements and Updates
