Place duplicate of part currently in model

I am unable to find a command which allows you to select a current part risiding in the model (i.e. door) which initiates the command to place a part exactly like the one selected.  Coming from Revit, this was a simple right click on a existing part in the model and then initiate the command "Place Similar".

What prompts this question is when I copy an existing door it does not "stick/reside" in the wall as if I place the door initially.

Using:  V8 XM BA 08.09.04.33    (military project so they have yet to adopt v8i)

 Thanks, Boyd

  • An outright copy sure does seem to be what you're looking for...

What do you mean by "it does not stick/reside in the wall as if I place the door initially"?  If you place a door, then copy it by sliding along the applicable wall, the copied version should automatically create an opening and move with the wall just like the original.  I don't have the specific version you've referred to, but the behavior is as expected in 08.09.04.46.

  • Steve,

You are right is not what I am looking for - that is what I have been doing.  With copy i can get the door to cut through the wall but if I move the wall, the door does not move with the wall, i.e. not sticking.

    thanks,

    Boyd

  • Hmmm...  The only case I've seen where a door doesn't move with the wall where it was placed, is if the Graphic Group Lock is off.  But if that was the case, the original door also wouldn't move with the wall, and it doesn't sound like that's happening...correct?

I honestly don't know why your copied doors are not linked with the walls.  If the door is creating an opening then it's obviously recoginizing the wall.  And if so, it should be linked to that wall through the GG.

Is this a delivered or custom door?  What type of wall?

  • Boyd,
I am not sure if this works in XM or not.
    It does work in V8i.

Double Click on door to bring up the modify door dialog box.
Without closing this dialog go and select the place door command.

The attributes for door that is loaded in the "Place Door command" will match
the door that was selected by double clicking on it.
    Thanks, Tom

  • Move does not stick with the wall it just moves.

Your method would be better and would require better doors with contraints on how they stay within a wall

I would also lie to se a command where you select a door in your model and can immedialy place that same type of door as if you selected it from a list

I seem to get the behavior that is mentioned by Steve.
If a door is moved or copied from one wall to another
it immeditely groups itself with the new wall.
In other words if I move the wall that a door touches the door moves
    with the wall.
As Steve mentioned, graphic group lock must be toggled on.

If on the other hand you are saying that the wall doesn't clean with other walls it is touching
after it is moved. That feature depends on if you have implied relationship toggled on.
If it is on and you move a wall, it will clean all walls to which it was originally attached.
If it is off, the wall moves without cleaning the attached walls.

    Thanks Tom
