Hi everybody!
Does anybody know if there is a way to automatically generate contour lines froma a 3D Mesh? Would be perfect to get automatically the lines and the altitude text.
I have a 3D model of all the region's territory (precise and with the correct altitude) and I use it really often, but until now if I needed contour lines I generated an horizontal section each meter...defenitely too much time wasted.
I know other programs have such a method but I can not find anything like that in Microstation.
Hope somebody can help! Thanks
Marianna
Ask inga has a tip that may be of use to you. Try doing this first.

If that doesnt have wat you need then you may want to check out the free versions of Bentley Civil (Geopak tools) or Bentley Inroads. (old names). These are free to use add-ons for any microstation user. They are cut-down versions of the software you buy like Bentley Civil Site etc.
They have some tools that may do this. I know they used to but I havn't used these in such a long time.
My fav was Geopak's civil, as it seemed to do more than Inroads, but then I lernt Geopak first so Inroads seemed alien to me trying to learn it.
Another tool is
Damon Aspden.
Sorry, Damon, but those versions do not run on V8i anymore.
We're having a serious discussion about that with Bentley at the moment (to be honest, this discussion has been going on for over a year now).
I think the upcoming V8i release 3 has some new possibilities regarding contour lines from LandXML files. However I can't tell you anything more about that. Inroads Civil Engineering Configuration could generate LandXML files, but again - won't run on V8i.
LOL.
I just run them on older versions of Microstation to keep them as part of the workflow.
Just save as and away you go. But these are still viable programs that will do wat you require.
An addition what Andreas wrote about upcoming MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries 3) release: It introduces a new type of element "Terrain Model", that can be created by importing LandXML file. If such terrain is displayed as triangles, contours etc. or their combinationes are just a type of terrain representation, nothing has to be created or generated, al required information are part of LandXML source data or are generated on-the-fly.
MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries 3) doesn't contain tools to create Terrain Model element, you have to import it from LandXML, so you still need to use some other tool (InRoads, Geopak...) that will create LandXML from your input data.
At least there will be two ways how to represent terrain surface in MicroStation - as Mesh and as Terrain.
With regards,
Jan
