Hello, I'm looking for some answers, I've been searching this site and others for hours and cant seem to find any clarification. my Dad's Custom Home company is trying to switch from Microstation v8i to Architecture v8i and I'm working out the kinks for them and teaching the office (about 7people) how to use the program while teaching myself. The biggest problem im having trouble with right now is setting up a database on our server so whenever we need to create a new wall, everyone in the office can use that new compound wall in the same file or another project. Im not sure what the difference is between databases, datagroups, datasets, cell libraries, and other terms ive seen on the forums. How would i go about this? Do i need to use Bentley's XM editor? should i use Oracle, BUDBC, ODBC, or OLEDB?? In Microstation they have a cell library set up but no one can tell me how they set it up and i dont know if that is even the same thing as a database/dataset/datagroup? Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks is Advance,
Isaac Strong
Hello Isaac,
Setting up MicroStation and the BIM applications to run on a network is done via configuration files. And the whole thing is referred to as "a workspace" or "the workspace".
So an office workspace configuration is what you are after.
One of the frequent posters to the building analysis and design forums has written a couple of blog entries that should help. So, here is a link to Mr. Zieritz's blog:

Also here is a link to the "Ask Inga" portion of BE Communities on workspace, this is MicroStation in focus but the general idea of a workspace is covered:
http://communities.bentley.com/communities/other_communities/askinga/w/askinga/what-is-a-workspace.aspx
There are various methods to configuring a workspace. One good practice is to have a workspace "sandbox" on a server to test your configurations.
Please keep in mind the Bentley Institute training offerings and Bentley Profesional Services consulting. You can inquire about these through your Bentley account manager.

Thanks and hope this gets you pointed in the right direction.
Thank you thank you thank perfect! Sorry that i dont know what im talking about
If it helps any, a few years ago I had created two solutions in our online KnowledgeBase in response to similar questions. You can find the KnowledgeBase here: appsnet.bentley.com/kbase
You can locate the two solutions by entering their ID numbers in the Search field:
"Terminology of Dataset vs. Workspace" - 35814
"Understanding the Dataset in BArch V8i" - 40988
Nothing groundbreaking here, but it may help to clarify some of the terminology we use.
