I've noticed some strange behaviour when using the automatic annotation rules in cut views with reference files. I've set up a rule to automatically annotates columns which appear in the cut view using datagroup annotation cells - this works as anticipated in the dynamic view. However, when I reference the DV into a sheet I've found the annotations seem to display erratically, sometimes not appearing, only to reappear when I close and reopen the file. After further investigation I've discovered the anotations appear when first referenced but they dissappear/reappear each consecutive time the file is reopened thereafter. I think the explanation is that the annotations are progammed to ensure there are no duplicates, and the sheet and dynamic view are creating a "feedback loop". If they're on in the sheet file the DV switches them off, if they're off in the sheet file the DV switches them back on again, etc... The problem seems confined to cut views, pressumably because the cut is processed each time the file is opened whereas the forward view is more static. The result is that the annotation switches on/off every other time the sheet is opened. I'd be grateful if anyone could verify this observation as it would appear to be a bug with the auto-annotation tool?

Quick Question... Is your cut co-planner to the elements you want to annotate? If you move your cut back a little bit, does the issue go away?
Hi Jeff,
The plan cut is going straight through the middle of a series of square columns. I've tried moving it back and forward as suggested, and re-cutting a fresh dynamic view... The behaviour remains with the annotations "blinking" on/off each time the file is reopened. Seems a pretty stable pattern, rather than a glitch.
Mark.. Everytime a DV drawing is reopened the annotations are validated...we check to determine whether or not elements have been moved, rotated or deleted and wheter or not they are still visible in the view. I suspect if you disable the auto anntation ( in the file menu, Building Designer> Enable Auto Annotations, uncheck this option), the blinking would stop, and you could manual request the anotation update. Also if you cached the DV view ( in the reference dialog), the blinking would stop. If either of these resolve the issue, then we know to look into the auto annotation code to determine whether or not we can supress the blinking (annotation update). Regardless, we would appreciate it if you could follow-up with TSG and file a formal TR with your test case, so we can insure we are addressing the correct issues.
Jeff,
Thanks, I think we've narrowed down on the problem - Both unchecking Enable Auto Annotations and swithcing the DV to a CVE remove the blinking problem. I've already logged a service ticket (SR Number : 7000073228). If you need anything additionally please let me know.
Couple of thoughts on the two approaches:
1/.Switching off Enable Auto Annotations doesn't seem to have many adverse effects for us - the only issue I see is that annotations are not automatically removed when the rule is switched off in the DV - I assume it's supposed to be enabled though, so there may be benefits I'm not aware of?
2/. We generally avoid CVE views wherever possible - they don't really fit with the dynamic view workflow, so other than isolating the problem I don't see this as a solution we'd generally wish to adopt.
Regards,
Thanks, Mark. I've taken the SR and will follow up from there if anything additional is needed.
Regarding Auto Annotation, its primary purpose is to dynamically add/modify/remove annotation in the Drawing Model based on any changes in the 3D model. So as you're working it is safe to leave off, and when you do need to see any model changes reflected in the drawing's annotation you can use the Refresh Automatic Annotations tool.
