Floor Penetrations Tool

I'm having all sorts of trouble with the Floor Penetrations Tool. If you refer to the attached screen grab, you'll see that the heads-up dimensions for this penetration differ from the dimensions reported in DataGroup Explorer!?

The peno was orginally placed at the size shown in DG Explorer and then resized using the two blue handles only. So why did the DataGroup Explorer not update? Element Information > Properties also shows the incorrect DG Explorer values, greyed out. The catalog shows these values as "Parametric Name - Width" and "Parametric Name - Length".

Also, if I try and type values into the heads-up values then DataGroup Explorer refreshes properly, but... the penetration no longer cuts a hole in the slab.

I also seem to be able to select the perforator seperately from the cross-lines and resize this without either the cross-lines or datagroup explorer updating.

Can someone confirm whether this is just me. Otherwise it looks like this tool is a complete mess - we certainly can't use it for construction information with these errors occuring.

Couple of other general queries - why does the penetration only have two blue resize handles, rather than 4?

Why is there no level assigned to the cross-lines? I don't seem to have any control to switch it on or off in my plans - I'm assuming I can edit the PAZ file to assign levels, but can't understand why this wouldn't already be set up?

  • The problem with non-sync values of the datagroup properties and the geometry is old, but it has been fixed in the latest release. You shouldn't have that problem now.

Regarding level of the crosses, I would propose that you fix it yourself. If I remember it correctly, they are in fact on a level, but not one that is used in Norway. But if you know a little bit of PCS, you can fix that for yourself.

    - start up Aecosim

    - Building Designer - Parametric Cell Studio

    - open the .paz cell

    - File - Properties - Family and Parts

If that isn't working, there are also other possibilities in PCS.

  • Thanks Andreas,

I've managed to fix the crosses level with the method you've described. Thanks you!

One issue - The crosses appear on a "construction" class for rectangular slab / wall penetrations and for circular wall penetrations. For some reason they're not on constructions for circular slab penetrations though. Any idea how I fix this in PCS also? I can't find any options to change classes.

Also you say the sync of geometry / datagroup has been fixed in the latest version? Do you mean in SS4? This doesn't seem to be the case if Thomas is saying he's getting the same results using that version, can anyone confirm this for us?

  • Hi Ian,

This is what I'm seeing in Ss6 (build .866) using the NM dataset:

  • Steve, thanks. Sorry to re-raise the issue but its killing me! It looks like you have a 400 x 400 penetration in the model there, but your DGS says 400 x 600. Please see attached file.

basically, placing a penetration, then resizing using handles and DGE values don't update, yet when I click "modify" it knows they're different. This is using GB SS6 out of the box. (version .829)

    any help much appreciated.

  • Hi Ian,
I can't reproduce this in SS5 or SS6, dragging either of the two width or length handles on the penetration correctly updates the DG in both versions. In SS6 I can also modify multiple penetations by editing values in DG Explorer.
I've tried a non-recommended workflow of modifying penetrations placed in SS5 using SS6, then going back to SS5, that also works but is not advised.
(It is possible to drag handles attached to the host form and make the hole bigger than the penetration but I think that is a differnet matter.)
Can you supply us with some sample files?

  • Marc,

here is one of the models, created using SS5.

Thanks for the prompt response and support.

Are there any particular configuration files you would need to mimic this?

    Cheers

  • Hi Ian,
It seems you're using custom penetrations, so to directly test them would require your custom datagroup catalogs, schemas (if applicable) and PAZs. FWIW, I placed a delivered penetration within your DGN file and it seemed to behave as expected.

One other thing... what happens if instead of dragging the edit handle to modify the size you click on the dimension value and change it there?
