Best way of exporting DWG files from cached 2D drawings?

DWG's are often a necessary deliverable in building contracts, and we have been asked to generate about 90!!

We are finding it incredibly difficult to do. The only way I have found, is to copy cached elements Cache in the 2D drawing - and then export.

However - not all elements in a 2D drawing can be group selected and copy cached - so we then have to go in and individually select elements to copy cache them.

Does anyone have any alternative methods of exporting cached 2D drawings to DWG?

  • You should be able to get them out and use the Batch Conversion tool to do it.  You just need to make sure to set a couple of settings:

In the DWG save options in the Edit menu of the Batch Convert tool, You need to set Merge Visible Edges of 3D Attachments, then click on the Visible Edge settings icon. (the cube with the lightning bolt)

(I apologize that I cannot insert the image of the dialog that I just created.  The insert image tool appears to not work on my machine.)

In the Visible Edge Settings dialog that then opens, set the method to Exact and Accuracy to Tolerance with the Tolerance at 0.  Toggle on Calculate Intersections and Remove Smooth Edges.  Toggle off Process Text and Dimensions.

(I apologize that I cannot insert the image of the dialog that I just created.  The insert image tool appears to not work on my machine.)

These settings will give you the best possible renditions of your DVs into the DWG files.  Depending on the complexity of your model geometry, you may be able to back down the accuracy settings to speed up the process without losing any detail.

Tip:  All of these settings are not saved when you save a .dws settings file. (There are multiple TRs filed.  It will be fixed in a future version.)  You should check the settings each time you start a batch job.
