Disabling transparency in Dynamic Views

 Product(s):AECOsim Building Designer

 Environment:N/A
 Area:Drawing Views

Problem

When creating Dynamic Views I am typically producing finished drawings. But I've noticed that the delivered Display Styles have Transparency enabled so that the transparent elements effectively "disappear", displaying what's behind them but without changing the symbology to dashed or dotted like hidden lines.  I would expect my out of the box results to be similar to when using Drawing Extraction Manager.  I may use element transparency in 3D models to see elements behind the outer envelope or beneath a roof within a rendered view, but I don't want that to change the look of my drawings.

Solution

The Display Style's Transparency Threshold option is designed to display elements as transparent when either the Element or Material Transparency exceeds a certain value; e.g., when they are intended to actually be "transparent".  However, since this may not be everyone's preference, the option can be completely disabled by un-checking the toggle in the applicable Display Styles.   So if you simply want to disable transparency for a specific Dynamic View, then un-checking the Transparency Threshold toggle in the Forward-Drawing display style is the simplest way to accomplish this.

However, if you want to see this same result in all new files/views, you will need to make that same change at the DGNLib level. Our delivered Display Styles are stored in DisplayStyle.dgnlib, by default located at C:\ProgramData\ Your_AECOsimBuildingDesigner_Path\WorkSpace\BuildingDatasets\Dataset_Name\dgnlib.  You could open this library, toggle off the Transparency Threshold option and then Save Settings. However, a preferable option would be to create a custom DGNLib that contains modified versions of the applicable Display Styles used by your Dynamic Views. The advantage of using this method is that your changes will not be overwritten when updating to newer versions of the product, which could contain updated versions of DisplayStyle.dgnlib.

Once the applicable Display Styles have been modified, you can quickly update existing Dynamic Views by opening the Display Styles dialog (while in the DGN file where the Saved View exists) and using the "Update From Library" button.

Configuration Variable, _USTN_SYSTYEMDGNLIBLIST, is used to  point to the C:\ProgramData\Bentley\AECOsimBuildingDesigner V8i\WorkSpace\BuildingDatasets\Dataset_US\dgnlib folder where the DisplayStyle.dgnlib resides.
