Backing up and importing an Electrical Symbol Library

 Product(s):AECOsim Building Designer
 Version(s):V8i (08.11.09.829)
 Environment:N/A
 Area:Electrical
 Subarea:Symbol Library

To upgrade to a new AECOsim Building Designer or Bentley Building Electrical Systems (BBES) version the following three steps need to be done in order to preserve all Symbol Library customization.

1. Backup existing Electrical dataset that contains customized symbol library

2. Remove the existing version

3. Restore old customized symbol library into the new release

Backing up the electrical dataset:

Before BBES is upgraded to the new release, it is a good practice to manually copy the entire electrical dataset.

By default, the electrical dataset is ElecdatasetNcsUS or in AECOsim Electrical it is the dataset of your country.  It might be renamed by setting the variable BBES_DATASETNAME.

In all BBES V8 2004 versions, using the default local dataset installation, the electrical dataset is located at:

C:\Program Files\Bentley\Workspace\TriForma\elecdatasetncsus\

For BBES V8 XM versions, the electrical dataset is located at:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Bentley\WorkSpace\TriForma\elecdatasetncsus\

For AECOsim Electrical versions, the electrical dataset is located at:

C:\ProgramData\Bentley\AECOsimBuildingDesigner V8i Ss5\WorkSpace\BuildingDatasets\Dataset_US\

The Actual dataset location on a company’s network will vary.
To confirm the actual dataset location use Workspace>configuration option and look for BBESDATA variable.

Once the location of the electrical dataset is determined, back up the entire dataset folder.

Hint   Note that default name Dataset_US might be changed and location on network will differ from the default installation path.

If any configuration variables are set in electrical.cfg, backup electrical.cfg since it will be overwritten with the new install. (For example if BBESDATA is set in electrical.cfg file)

From the backup of electrical.cfg file copy the section that was used to set electrical dataset to the custom location on company’s network and add it to the new electrical.cfg file once the new version is installed.

C:\Program Files\Bentley\program\triforma\Electrical\config\appl\electrical.cfg]

For AECOsim Electrical, check in C:\Program Files (x86)\Bentley\AECOsimBuildingDesigner V8i Ss5\AECOsimBuildingDesigner\config\appl\BuildingDisciplines.cfg

Removing current BBES version

After current dataset is backed up, remove current version of BBES using Control Panel>Add or remove programs option.

New BBES versions will require newer MicroStation and TriForma versions, so download and install all dependences prior to installing BBES. AECOsim Building Designer will have AECOsim Electrical installed within it.

Install new BBES version

Installing the old customized symbol library into a new Electrical release

Step 1:

From backup of the old electrical dataset, navigate to the metadata folder and copy the following files:

For AECOsim Electrical:

ECSL.DBT

ECSL.DBF

ECSL.IX1

ECSLGR.DBF

ECSLGR.DBT

ECSLGRIX1.NTX

ECSL.INI

In addition to the above listed files, copy all ECSL (three digit number).INI files.
For example, ECSL080.INI…

All listed files carry important Symbol library properties.

Paste all above listed files to new electrical dataset in Metadata folder.

This will overwrite any existing ECSL files in new electrical dataset.

Hint   Make sure that all files are copied to the active electrical dataset metadata folder which will be located at your company’s network server.

If you are not sure about the electrical dataset location on your network check variable BBESDATA.

Step 2;

From backup of the old electrical dataset navigate to SymLibs folder and copy all folders with three digit number names. For example 080, 085…

Paste all three digit number folders into the SymLibs folder in Electrical dataset on the network.

Start BBES, and go to design file setup. The old customized Symbol libraries are now displayed and available for Selection in the new BBES version.
