AECOsim Building Designer - Standalone Installation with regional datasets

      Applies To

      Product(s): AECOsim Building Designer V8i
      Version(s): 08.11.09.747
      Environment:  N/A
      Area:  Installation
      Subarea:  Datasets
      Original Author: Marc Thomas

A single standalone installation should be very straightforward. Download the application and any regional datasets that you need to use, for example using SELECTseries 5:

    • AECOsim Building Designer V8i (English) x86 - 08.11.09.747, this includes the default US Imperial dataset.

To this you can add regional datasets, for instance:

    • AECOsim Building Designer, SELECTseries 5 - Dataset SE (Sweden) (MultiLanguage) x86   08.11.09.728
    • AECOsim Building Designer, SELECTseries 5 - Dataset GB (United Kingdom) (English) x86   08.11.09.728
    • AECOsim Building Designer, SELECTseries 5 - Dataset NM (Neutral Metric) (MultiLanguage) x86   08.11.09.730

Before installing, set Windows UAC to the minimum value during installation, reset to it's previous value once finished.

Install the application using the 'Run as administrator option'.

Note that the Optional 'Visualisation Content' is a 200Mb download and can take some time, you may prefer to deselect it. The content is primarily sample vehicles for use in rendering. It can be added at a later date if needed.

Install the regional datasets that you want, when prompted, pick the 'install in workspace' option.

If you were to install all of the above, you should then find in C:\ProgramData\Bentley\AECOsimBuildingDesigner V8i Ss5\WorkSpace\BuildingDatasets subfolders:

    • Dataset_GB
    • Dataset_NM
    • Dataset_SE
    • Dataset_US.

    In C:\ProgramData\Bentley\AECOsimBuildingDesigner V8i Ss5\WorkSpace\Projects\BuildingExamples you should find:

    • BuildingTemplate_GB
    • BuildingTemplate_NM_Full
    • BuildingTemplate_NM_Light
    • BuildingTemplate_SE
    • BuildingTemplate_US.

When you open AECOsim Building Designer the initial Open Dialog will show the Projects pop-down menu at the lower right that will include these names.

If you are happy to use the default locations to store your project data create your own projects by copying and renaming the appropriate template folder, e.g. for a GB dataset project copy the whole of BuildingTemplate_GB to the same folder renaming it, for example, MyProject_GB.

You will now have an additional folder C:\ProgramData\Bentley\AECOsimBuildingDesigner V8i Ss5\WorkSpace\Projects\BuildingExamples\MyProject_GB. This will also be listed in the Projects pop-down menu. Note that AECOsim Building Designer may need to be restarted for the new project to show up.

The AECOsim Building Designer configuration can be modified to locate your project data in a different local folder or on the network. Many other configuration settings are available to modify the application's behaviour to suit your needs or environment.

I have written about some of these on my Bentley blog to accompany the information provided in our help documentation and online wikis. You may also find the example given in AECOsim Building Designer - QuickConfig Standard helpful.
