Insulation on HVAC and Plumbing components can be achieved in a variety of ways in BBMS.  We will explore the three options.

The option we will explore is adding insulation during the time of placement

• Start in an empty file
• Select the Place Rectangular Duct Command
• Select the Part of Supply New
• In the DataGroup Instance Data dialog scroll down to InsulationThickness
• Change the thickness to 2"
• In the DataGroup Instance Data dialog scroll down to InsulationSymbology
• In the Part Name type in Insulation1 (this is the default part)

  The insulation part name must match the Family and Part name in your dataset. 

• Place ductwork anywhere in your file

 Insulation is now on your ductwork and fittings.

The next option we will explore is adding insulation via the DataGroup Modify Instance Data tool.

• Undo all of the ductwork you created, or create new ductwork using the Supply New Part
• Select the Select By Attributes Tool from Edit > Select By Attributes
• Change the Criteria to TriForma and se the Family and Part to Duct, Supply-New
  Click Apply.

Your Supply line has been select

• Select the Modify Existing Data tool from Project Management > DataGroup - Building Components > Modify Existing Data

•  Leave the Catalog Type set to All and Click OK.

You have selected all of the Catalog Items in the Supply line. You can filter out specific catalog items as well. Since the BBMS Modify tool only modifies one component at a time this tool demonstrates is capability for editing multiple components with similar attributes at one time.

• Change the Insulation Thickness to 2 (inches) and Click OK

Insulation has been added to all Supply Line components

• Cancel Select By

The next option we will explore is adding insulation via the Analyze Route Tool.

• Continuing in the same file
• Undo the last insulation placement via Element > Undo, or CTRL Z
• Select the analyze Route Tool from Mechanical > HVAC > Analysis & Manufacturing
  Click on the Supply Line (cyan color)

• Click on Analyze System

• Click the Insulation/Lining Tab via the arrows button
• Change the values to match the image
  

• Check All and Click Apply

The insulation is added to your system line

There is also the ability to create rules and apply them to your system as well.
Check the Rules option and select the acquisition button to display.

 NOTE: By Default, the Insulation material list is stored in the file InsulationAndLiningMaterials.xml located in the ...\WorkSpace\TriForma\hvac_imperial\datagroupcatalogs\Insulation_lib\ directory.

Caution:  Insulation on Mechanical items can have a negative effect on extractions.  Since you the insulation is hiding the duct/pipes, all of your elements are hidden and you will not be able to correctly display items that are hidden by other ducts/pipes.
