September 2016: Extending the AECOsim Dataset - Manufacturer's Content
Question: Does the RFA import wizard work all the time? Will it import any RFA item?
Answer: ABD can import most standalone, 3D categories. RFAs that are for annotation categories, like section markers and wall tags and RFAs that are 2D profiles are not supported. RFA trusses require input form the tool they are placed with and therefore are not supported by ABD.
Question: Will all the RFA Family types be imported also?
Answer: Yes, when an RFA is imported that has family types you will have the choice to select some or all of the family types to be imported as individual catalog items that point to the same parametric cell with different default settings.
Question: Can VOB files from VUE or 3MX from Context Capture be imported?
Answer: VOB files cannot be imported directly to ABD, however they could be saved to an OBJ, FX or 3DS from VUE and then imported to ABD. 3MX from Context Capture can be imported.
Question: Would you recommend importing RFA objects, or creating your own .paz call when creating a customized parametric object?
Answer: This is a question of preference (and file size). Every RFA you place into your DGN will make the file a larger by the size of that RFA and it could rapidly increase the size of the file. The RFA interpreter was meant to be a way to import objects from manufacturers, so if you can find a good quality RFA from a manufacturer that represents the object you want to place in your model then by all means use the RFA. It is a faster method of adding parametric content to your model.
However, if you are interested in creating more generic or custom parametric objects, I would recommend creating them with Parametric Cell Studio. This is not the easiest tool to use initially, however with some training, it can be learned and once you begin to create libraries of components you will find you can assemble a number of cells fairly quickly. I am finishing up a rewrite of the training material for Parametric Cell Studio, so look for new OnDemand videos and workbooks on the Learn Server in the next couple of weeks, and a Live class the first week of December.
Question: Can the imported RFA be edited or modified?
Answer: The internal structure of the RFA itself cannot be modified in ABD, but of course any existing parametric properties can be edited during and after placement.
