Overview

Workspaces, Worksets, and DGN files are used in OpenBuildings Energy Simulator to save project data. These set up a folder structure that allows for effective management of preferences, such as standards, custom constructions and schedules. Simply put:

DGN - Your building model geometry

WorkSet - Your project folder

WorkSpace - A collection of projects

Method

1. Choose a Workspace

Upon starting the software, dropdown menus will appear for WorkSpace and WorkSet. To create a new WorkSpace select the dropdown > Create WorkSpace.

Suggested practise would be to place all projects within a new Workspace named Energy Simulator Projects. This can be created created locally or at a shared location - to create and manage projects on a shared server please refer to this article.

2. Create a new Workset

A new Workset should be created for each project. To create a new project, create a new Workset, and enter your project name. Click OK. (Should you wish to save the project at an alternative location, select Root Folder > Browse).

3. Create the DGN model

Create your building model DGN in the new WorkSet by clicking on New File. The DGN should be located within the Workset selected. Simply enter a name and click OK.

The software will now open your new project.

A new Workset should be created for each project.

Method

Steps:

1. Choose a Workspace

Upon starting the software, dropdown menus will appear for WorkSpace and WorkSet. To create a new WorkSpace select the dropdown > Create WorkSpace.

2. Create a new Workset

To create a new project, create a new Workset, and enter your project name. Click OK. (Should you wish to save the project at an alternative location, select Root Folder > Browse).

3. Create the DGN model

Create your building model DGN in the new WorkSet by clicking on New File. The DGN should be located within the Workset selected. Simply enter a name and click OK.

The software will now open your new project.

Overview

A new Workset should be created for each project.

Navigating to a Workset in Windows explorer (easiest method shown here) will show the benefit of this process. All project data is organized in a concise manner, with a folder structure as follows:

Designs: Each New project file created in this Workset will appear as a DGN within this folder.
Output: Contains reports from calculations and simulations completed, for all projects within the Workset.
Standards: Contains data associated with the projects in the Workset, including Constructions, Materials, HVAC Systems, Schedules and Weather Data. Any new DGN model created in the Workset can avail of this data.

Method

Overview

A new Workset must be created for each project. The Worksets is, in effect, the project folder.

Method

Upon starting the software, dropdown menus will appear for Workspace and Workset:

1. Choose a Workspace

All projects can exist in the same Workspace.

2. Create a new Workset

Enter your project name. Should you wish to save the project at an alternative location, select Root Folder > Browse. Click OK.

3. Create the DGN model

Create your building model by clicking on New File. Enter a name and click OK.

The DGN must be located within the Workset selected. Do not Browse to an alternate location.

The software will now open your new project.

Designs: Each New project file created in this Workset will appear as a DGN within this folder.
Output: Contains reports from calculations and simulations completed, for all projects within the Workset.
Standards: Contains data associated with the projects in the Workset, including Constructions, Materials, HVAC Systems, Schedules and Weather Data. Any new project created in the Workset can avail of this data.

As mentioned above, to save your projects at an alternative location just change the Root location as shown in this video:

Method

When opening the software, dropdown menus will appear for Workspace and Workset:

Selecting the dropdown > Create Workspace will bring up the following menu, where you can enter the Workspace name. (Note the Folder locations can normally be left as default - these will determine where the Workspace folder is created).

Similarly, a Workset folder can then be created:

You can then create your new DGN model by clicking on New File. This will create a model in the according folder, as shown below. Note that the DGN must be saved within the Workset selected.
