Using Display Rules to Indicate Wall Fire Ratings

      Product: OpenBuildings Designer
      Version: CONNECT Edition
      Area: Customization
    Subarea: Display Rule

    The Situation

Do you need to quickly review the wall fire ratings in your model?

    Solution

Use a Display Rule to filter the walls by fire rating and then display each rating type in a different color.

A Display Rule is a set of display criteria which are processed on any view of a design. Display rules allow you to control the symbology, appearance, and display of design elements based on the properties (including DataGroup properties) of an element, a named group, a view, a model, a reference, or a file.

Display Rules are associated with Display Styles. Each display rule contains a condition and its recommended action. Display Styles are typically stored as shared resources in DGN Libraries, so the steps include creating a new Display Style DGN library, and a new Display Style with a Display Rule that filters the elements of type 'wall' by fire rating and then displays each group of walls in a different color.

To create a Display Style and Display Rule use the following steps.

    1. Create a new file within the [Current WorkSet]/Standards/DgnLib folder and name it DisplayStyles_project.dgnlib.
    2. In the new DisplayStyles_project.dgnlib file attach a reference of a model that includes walls. This will be needed to set the conditions that define the rule.
    3. Open the Display Styles dialog.
      1. Select the New icon to create a new display style and rename it 'Wall Fire Rating'.
      2. Select the Edit icon under the Display Rules tab.
    4. In the Display Rules dialog select the New icon to create a new Display Rule Set and rename it 'Wall Fire Rating'.
      1. Select the new 'Wall Fire Rating' Display Rule Set and use the New icon to create a new Display Rule.
      2. Select the Condition Applies Always to open the Condition Editor.
    5. Select Pick property... and type 'Rating' in the Search field, then select the property Fire | Rating under the Wall element. Set the Condition to = 1 Hour.
      1. Select OK.
    6. In the Display Rules dialog create a new Action for this condition. Select the Add button and select the action Symbology Override. Set the desired override color.  All walls with a fire rating of 1 Hour will be this color.
    7. Use the New icon to create a second display rule that creates the condition ELEMENT.Wall.Fire | Rating = '2 Hour' and set a Symbology Override of a different color for 2 Hour walls.
    8. If needed, create additional display rules for additional wall ratings.
    9. Create the last rule to have a Condition of Applies Always and set the Action to be a Symbology Override to a gray color. This allows you to display all remaining elements in a gray color.
    10. Close the Display Rule dialog and select the new display rule from the pulldown. It is now part of the new display style, 'Wall Fire Rating'.
    11. Return to your model and apply the new display style to one of the open views.
