Assigning prefabricated HVAC to Rooms for Simulation

 Product(s):OpenBuildings Energy Simulator
 Version(s):All
 Area:Data Managers
 Subarea:HVAC Manager

Overview

This article provides an example of how to incorporate a Fan Coil HVAC system to your project, assign it to rooms, and perform the resulting Dynamic Simulation.

As mentioned in this article, the systems defined in the HVAC Manager must comply with the rules of Energy Plus. With this in mind, a detailed knowledge of EnergyPlus is advisable if customising the standard systems that have been included in the software. You can find these prefabricated systems by selecting 'Application' in the top left corner of the HVAC manager menu. The relevant system(s) can then be copied to your Project and applied to rooms/zones as required.

Should you instead wish to create your own system, the Simplified System option is advised:

Method

1. Go to Data Managers > HVAC Systems. The HVAC Project tab should open as below, with only the default steady-state HVAC (ie that used only in the steady state CIBSE Gain calculation) present:

2. To add a HVAC System to your Project, select Application. A thorough list of complex HVAC system types can be seen:

3. Each Category can be expanded to find the specific HVAC System you need. For example, see the numerous Fan Coil Systems below.

4. Left clicking on each HVAC system will display all the components that incorporate it, with options for a graphical schematic, or list of data:

6. To import the required HVAC system to your project, right-click on it and select Copy To Project:

7. Select Project, and the HVAC will now be available:

8. To Assign This HVAC to Rooms,

Select the Room Component in the schematic and double click on it:

The rooms / zones can be assigned, and you can set your HVAC design parameters:

Your HVAC System will now be available in to model in Simulations:

An additional example of adding a PTAC air conditioning system, and assigning to rooms, can be found in the manual - here.
