Migration - Upgrading from earlier versions

      Product(s): OpenBuildings Designer
      Version(s): CONNECT Edition
      Environment: N/A
      Area: Installation
      Subarea: Migration/Upgrade

    Overview

Migration of datasets and projects to a newer version of AECOsim Building Designer can be accomplished by following the guides in this section. Application installation is covered in the Installation - OpenBuildings Designer section.

This is a task that generally should only be undertaken by the people responsible for maintenance of the CAD/BIM systems to ensure that the appropriate company procedures are followed and the required IT security permissions are available.

The best approach is to create a duplicate workspace containing the Dataset and other resources for the new version and a separate location for new and upgraded projects. Projects to be upgraded should be copied to the new location leaving the existing version intact until the migration has been successfully completed.

It is frequently advised that active projects should not be upgraded to a new application version (on most CAD/BIM platforms). This is good advice as any significant changes in the IT aspects of a project generally carry some element of risk. However depending on the size of a project, the stage a project has reached and/or on the project duration, version migration may be worth considering if the updates provided by the latest application version offer sufficient productivity or other advantages to justify the time spent on upgrade.

    • Projects close to completion will usually not be worth upgrading, the gains are likely to be minimal.
    • Those at an early stage are prime candidates, the gains are likely to be significant and the task and associated disruption will be smaller.
    • Projects in mid-stream will need careful consideration of the factors involved.
