How to create a custom Catalog Item that can be copied to another Catalog Type

      Product(s): OpenBuildings Designer
      Version(s): CONNECT Edition
      Area: DataGroup System
      Subarea: Catalog Editor

    Problem Description

We often see that when creating custom catalogs some will use the primary XML file to create the Catalog Item. For example, while creating a custom wall the main Wall.xml file is been used:

So, it becomes difficult to copy those items to another Catalog Type when it is required.

    Steps to Resolve

To avoid such a scenario create a new XML file for those custom Catalog Items using the ‘Create a new DataGroup File’ button as shown in this image:

Next, when the ‘New DataGroup File’ window opens give it a new name (here we used ’test_new_wall’) then save the file:

After doing so go to another Catalog Type where you want to copy this same Catalog Item. There, right-click on it to open a dropdown menu from where you can choose ‘New Catalog Item’:

After the ‘New Catalog Item’ window pops up, under the file section pick the new XML file (in this example ‘test_new_wall.xml’), then click on ‘OK’,
