Problem Description

Why can’t I use the Calculated Path to connect ducts? Only Freeform Path allow me to connect them. What’s the difference between a Freeform Path and a Calculated Path in the Device Hookup tool?

Steps to Resolve

Both Freeform Path and Calculated Path methods allow you to create a connection between the two existing elements. But there are a few differences between them.

Calculated Path was designed for unplanned connections where multiple solutions are available. If you use calculated path, the connection between the two elements will be created automatically at one of the elements, depending on which element you select first. It always creates a connection to the element you select second. That’s why this option it’s not suitable for simpler connections where only one solution is likely to be available.

Freeform Path was designed for all connections, and it allows you to create a connection anywhere. You can manually indicate the location of the connection. For simple connections, we recommend using the Freeform Path option.

Below are some examples of how to use Freeform Path and Calculated Path options.

1) Simple connection where only one solution is available

2) More complicated connection where multiple solutions are available
