Hi Guys,
Just a quick question regarding curtain walling. I have drawn up the model and entered all windows, doors etc into the model, however parts of the building are curtain walling only? Is the best method of entering the curtain walling by generating a new wall in the fabric properties and entering all data such as dimensions, thickness, material type and U-value etc or by leaving the wall as a standard brick wall and inputting the glass so it covers the full wall with all the relevant properties?
Thanks
Josh
Hi Josh,
I would advise the latter approach, of entering this as a fully glazed façade. If this is specifically for a PartL calculation then the NCM Modelling guide should also be of some assistance, eg please see excerpt below:

Thanks for the info Shane, at the moment i have modelled the building with 12mm glass sheeting inner and outer layers inline with the curtain walling within the specification, would you advise doing this and then adding the glazing/windows on top as curtain walling or as i said above, leave the external wall layer as brickwork with glazing on top with the curtain wall specification?
I'm not quite sure what you mean as its a little difficult to visualise exactly what you are modelling - it sounds like you may be considering internal glazing. If so internal solar gains will not pass through rooms so this would not be recommended. Curtain walling is not directly available in the software so the only way to approximate it really would be to enter as a regular window, with the glazing properties tweaked accordingly.
Hi Shane,
I think you have answered my question there above. As there is no external layer for curtain walling i have inputted an external wall as glass sheet material with glazing over the top to appear as external curtain walling and fabricate it through the glazing properties.
Would it be possible to alter the external wall from brick into glass sheeting without adding a glazed window and just have the external layers as glass sheeting to fabricate the curtain walling?
No, there is nowhere to enter Solar Gain Factors and the like under the wall properties - solar gains are specific to windows only. So you would need to enter as a regular window. Hope that helps to clarify.
