Hi Murphy,

OpenBuildings Energy Simulator is a new package offered by Bentley, subscribing to which you will have free entitlement of Hevacomp. Energy Simulator is more advanced than Hevacomp, as it is built with the connect edition, which is upgraded from v8i.

That information is great, I really appreciated that.

Just in relation to the open building energy simulator- is this a new package from Bentley or is it part of Hevacomp?

We are using version V8i of hevacomp.

Hi Seamus,

Good to hear from you, I hope you're well. Be happy to help - that's what we're here for! I'd just create a new thread next time if you need anything, as replies to old ones can be missed sometimes.

For your building you will need to do as follows:

Exposed roofs must be traced and then setup over the relevant floor so I would what you suggest sounds right to me - i.e. I would 'Add a new roof drawing' for each floor, trace the sections above that floor, and then setup exposed roofs as below - ensuring to select the correct floor, and omitting any internal rooms not below the exposed roof:
Next, Hevacomp won't recognise rooms above/below automatically - so you will need to instruct it to do so by setting up intermediate floors as below:

Going forward, I'm not sure if you have tried out OpenBuildings Energy Simulator yet, but I would say such buildings would be easier to model using it, as it automatically creates flat roofs for each room, and automatically recognises if there are rooms above/below, and converts the surfaces to ceilings/internal floors accordingly. So there is no need for manual intermediate floor/ceiling setup, or tracing of roof sections for flat roofs.

Update 9 will be out later this quarter and will include Ireland PartL, so it may suit to test the waters at that stage.

Hi Shane,

How are you keeping? Hope all is well.

Im sorry to bother you like this , but I am wondering you might be able to help me with some information on a model we are building in Hevacomp. Please see screen grad below.

The building is a 9 story building including a basement level, which is sub ground floor level.

We are just concerned in relation to the heat loss results through the exposed roof / roofs

Our query’s relate to the following areas

<![if !supportLists]>1. <![endif]>Setting of Internal roof / ceilings between floors

<![if !supportLists]>a. <![endif]>From the model below would we be right in thinking that hevacomp will automatically read internal roofs / ceilings between each level , or do we have to draw them & assign them in the add roof section??

<![if !supportLists]>2. <![endif]>Setting of External roof sections.

<![if !supportLists]>a. <![endif]>Similar question relating to setting of external roofs. From the model below there are portions of roof section from floors below which are exposed???

<![if !supportLists]>b. <![endif]>Will hevacomp automatically know that these sections are external or do we have to add a roof section to each and every one of the exposed sections???

<![if !supportLists]>3. <![endif]>In the add roof section is this function mainly used for adding in roofs with a pitch or obscure angle only ???

<![if !supportLists]>4. <![endif]>How I have been drawing in my roof sections in the past was

<![if !supportLists]>a. <![endif]>I would import the dxf file for each level and trace the exposed section as required using the snip below as an example. After I have drawn in all the exposed roof sections I would then go to the assign roof tab and click assign roof.

Hi Seamus,

I'm good thanks, hope all's well with you.

When you enter a new DXF into an existing model (ie as shown here) the model will not be impacted. Any traced rooms will remain, just with the new DXF background.

I suspect two things have led to your confusion:

1. It sounds like your new DXF had a different origin point to the previous one, that is why the floor plans appear far apart.

2. It sounds like you have then traced duplicate rooms over this new DXF

If the above sounds like it could be the case, then you would need to firstly back up the project as it is, and then delete the duplicate rooms. If you have difficulty zooming to the duplicate rooms due to the now very large area of the floors, you can user Find Room as below:
