Resetting User Prefs in OpenComms Designer

In older versions of BentleyComms software, the focus.rsc file would periodically need to be deleted, especially after growing to a large file after a lot of menu and user interface items were moved and modified. This file contained the user pref settings for the software. If this focus.rsc file became corrupt or bloated in size, it would often result in strange or unexplained behavior in the software. (e.g. unresponsive commands, missing dialogs, etc.) Deleting this file would generate a new focus.rsc, and the unexplained occurrences would be resolved.

The equivalent file in the CONNECT version of OpenComms Designer is the username.pref file, which can usually be found in the Settings folder, which is inside the project folders in the shared worksets directory:

     [shared drive]…\Configuration\WorkSpaces\CommunicationsSpatial\WorkSets\COMMSTOWNSPATIAL\Settings

The location of the user pref file is controlled by the MS_USERPREF variable in the macro section of the schema:

To generate a new user preference file for the database user, exit OpenComms Designer, delete the username.upf file and then restart OpenComms Designer.

Another location where other User Prefs are stored in CONNECT is in the Prefs directory found in the following location:

                          C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Bentley\OpenCommsDesigner\10.0.0\prefs

The entire Prefs folder can be deleted (see NOTE below) after exiting OpenComms Designer, and a new Prefs folder will be generated the next time OpenComms Designer is started.

NOTE: All Quick Access toolbar modifications will be gone, and other personal menu and toolbar settings will have to be reset after deleting the Prefs folder.

The following screen caps show what changes may occur in the personal menu items after deleting the *.upf file from the Settings folder, or the Prefs folder from the users AppData folder.

The following screencap shows the original OCD session, before deleting any prefs—Command Manager is docked on the right, Map Connections is docked on the left, and the Quick Access toolbar has been modified to user’s preference:

The following screencap shows the opening screen after the Dan.upf file has been deleted from the settings folder—the Quick Access toolbar is still modified correctly, Command manager has become un-docked, and the Map Connections toolbar has become undocked and closed:

The following screencap shows the opening screen after the Prefs folder has been deleted from the Settings folder—the Map Connections dialog has become undocked, but open, the Quick Access toolbar has become wiped out, and the Command manager dialog is still docked:
